Ferret, I had an experience much like yours. I was leaving a Chik-Fil-A as a small girl and her mother walked up. The girl stopped, turned to me and covered her ears. The mother said "she wants to hear you start it". I just said "it's a quiet one" and started it. The girl looked amazed and "karate chopped" her hands down to her hips. I thought maybe she is disappointed, but she got the biggest grin and watched as I backed out and rode off. I was grinning to.

Last summer I was in a public park with the 1100 backed up fairly close to the back of a park bench.
When I came back to the bike an elderly couple were sitting on the bench, and as I suited up to leave, they also got up to leave.
Other very loud bikes had come and gone so they obviously wanted to get away from the muffler blast.
I told them my bike was quiet and not to leave. I started the engine, they smiled and sat back down.
