Good article, and many of the reasons why I have no desire to go to India.

That's like Zen. Suffering for the sake of enjoying non suffering! I work with some guys from India and even they say it is just too overcrowded.

Whew, that sounds rough around town. I'm selling my Royal Enfield, and it sure was fun around the city, but I can't imagine that type of congestion. I am going to miss the little guy, sure was a classic beauty.

Fascinating read and I admire the adventurous spirit of those who ride in India but not for me by any means.

The adventure of it all pulls at me. I can see myself atop an Enfield, dodging chickens, oxen and city buses. Part of me wants desperately to experience it. Another part of me wants desperately to stay alive.

Ferret,
The bike rode great and made the beautiful thumping sound associated with RE single-cylinder, and it got 85 mpg. I had it for about two years, and only put 2000 miles on it. Perfect for commuting, and a blast on dirt roads too. There were some issues. However, reading around, I think they may have been unique to my bike. There was a bad gasket where the kickstart entered the engine and it leaked a little oil (the bike has an electric start too). My dealership replaced the gasket three times under warranty. The leak was minuscule, and not even enough that I had to ever add any oil. Also, the glue that held the leather on the motorcycle seat started to come unglued underneath, towards the front (for some reason, they do not staple it on). I could have stretched it back and stapled it in place, but I got a new seat under warranty. Neither of these things affected riding the bike. It felt best at around 65mph. I sold it this morning to an enthusiastic kid.

Two friends and I rented small cycles for a weekend in India while studying abroad. Another friend rode with us 2 up, and we switched off who had the passenger. We were in a relatively small city for India (about 700,000 population). Traffic seems insane at first, but finding the flow and staying super alert got us around fine. It was exilerating! At one point my passenger had to squeeze her legs in tight so we wouldn't get smooshed as we squeezed through a bus and oncoming freight truck! The lanes don't mean much, or any rules for that matter, but we found the other drivers were at least paying attention (no one texting or on the phone! And not because they don't have that, they do) and there was a "safe" flow within the madness.
