And home again

A night in the big smoke was enough. It was time to head home the next day and I decided to retrace my steps for the early part of the ride, but then come down from Mt Glorious to the east and enjoy the Mt Mee Rd. I’ve [url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=5204]been there before.

So I set off again up the Mt Nebo Road that I’d ridden down the day before.












I decided to turn off and see if I could cop a decent view of the city. The road to the lookout was a bit of fun.

Just after Mt Nebo, I turned down the hill towards Stamford. My camera’s memory card was full again and, even though I made some room on it at Stamford, I didn’t actually take very many more pictures on the way home.

Mt Mee was, as usual, magnificent. I wanted to stop at the Pitstop Café for lunch as it’s very motorcycle friendly and has commanding views south over the valley to Brisbane. I pulled up, switched off and was taking my helmet off when a woman appeared behind me nearly startling me to death. She told me I was dead out of luck; they were closing in five minutes and had put everything away. It was kind, I guess. I was saved the climb up the steps and also from taking off much of my gear.

So I went on my way. There were no police or damsels in distress. I stopped and took one photo looking north over the Glasshouse Mountains.


For some reason that was it for photos. Actually, I was not feeling particularly well and was beginning to ache as if I was getting a fever. I should have found the highway and headed home. But I didn’t. A stop at Woodford’s Braisen Hussy for lunch perked me up a little and I thought to ride a back road to Beerwah. I soon discovered it was dirt and I couldn’t be bothered so I rode back the way I’d come the day before.

At Beerwah I took a pretty back road to Mooloola Valley where I refuelled and, for no reason I can now recall, decided to go in search of a road I’d intended to take on an earlier ride. I’d missed the turn off, and thought I’d see what it was like. If all went well, I’d end up just above the final magnificent set of twisties on the Nambour-Mapleton Road.

Do you think I could find it? I got onto the road it runs off and set off up it. It’s an old favourite road that climbs up sharply to Montville. I was looking for the entrance to Jackson Road that, on Google Maps sticks out like the things to the rear of the proverbial dog. But it wasn’t there. I went up. I went back. I went up all the way to Montville and then back down again. In the end, I turned on the GPS and tracked it down. It's the northernmost Point A on the map thumbnail. There was a pathetic goat track that looked more like the rarely-used route to the local farmer’s back paddock than a road. I was reluctant to ride it as I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to turn around if it petered out.

Grumpily, I rode back up the hill to Montville, turned right, headed along the ridge, took the road down to Nambour, hit the highway and went home. Aching.

In the middle of the night I was woken by the ache in my right thigh. It turned out to be bursitis, although I have no idea what I did to bring it on, and it has been followed by a weird hamstring injury which has largely kept me off the bike. So you’ll not be troubled by ride reports for a bit.

As to that road, I’m not frightened by a bit of dirt so, one day, I’ll go and find the other end of it, ride up it and report.
