Stichill,

The razing of that beautiful old filling station is very sad. I'm so glad you managed to grab what will probably be one of the last photos of it.

I liked your ruminations on refusing to be constrained by time when you're riding and want to take photos. My reaction is a little different. Whenever I have a camera with me I want to take photos and I often wonder whether it gets in the way of enjoying what you're doing. Hanging a camera around my neck when I'm riding often requires me to slow down a bit to take a photo and I lose the rhythm of riding. Similarly, when I'm travelling and I want to photograph lots of wonderful new and exotic sites, I often wonder whether my enjoyment of them in the moment isn't compromised. Unless one is a photographer, if one is photographing, one is not quite doing whatever else it is that's got one to the site of the photograph.

Some days I have to leave the camera at home and just enjoy the ride.

Some days, I wear the camera, but don't take any pics (but honestly that is rare lol).

Often when I am on a trip with someone I show them the day's pics and they are like "where was that? I didn't see that? Will you send me that pic?

Like the pic of the filling station Stichill took. Now the only proof that it even existed, and it's much easier to show the pic and produce the emotion for the viewer, than simply saying "there was this old red filling station. It was cool, but they tore it down".

I find the guys that do the photography truly want you to share in their adventures, more than just telling you about them. It's what makes the ride reports so darn good, and I really appreciate the guys that take the time to take the pics and post up the reports.

How sad that the old service station is no more. I can remember stopping at "mom & Pop" stations like that while on trips with my folks in the fifties. There are still a few around home and your excellent pics have inspired me to get pictures of these places while some are still about.
