Riding to Idaho (pic test)
#1

I spent last week riding my CB from Phoenix to Emmett, ID where I left the bike in my friend's garage. I'll be returning in my plane this week.

I forgot my lanyard cam (as usual), so I didn't manage to take a whole lot of photos on my phone. This post is basically a test of my new Imgur.com account.

The ride was 1570 miles, with all but about 50 miles of it on back roads. Google says I could have done it in about 950 miles, but what does Google know about riding a CB through the mountains? Tongue General route was Phoenix->Page, AZ->Panguitch, UT->Evanston, WY->Sun Valley, ID-> Emmett, ID.

Loaded and on the road, somewhere in Southern UT.

Canyons in Central UT.

Most pics were taken on a loop from Sun Valley up Idaho 75 to Challis, then back via US 93. I met a tattooed, bearded Harley rider in Sun Valley. After him making fun of my "rice burner" and me making fun of his "paint shaker", we had a beer and decided to ride up to Challis the next day. Although he'd lived in Idaho for years, he's never ridden the Sawtooth Valley on highway 75. It was a great trip, although near the end of the 300 mile day, the Hog had taken its toll on his butt. Climbing to Galena Pass. Still snow at around 8,000 ft.

On the other side, we see the Sawtooth Valley and the headwaters of the Salmon River. You could literally jump across the Salmon at this point.

This curvy road follows the Salmon all the way to Challis.

Coming back on US 93 the road disappears in a narrow canyon.

At day's end, I rolled into my campsite along the Big Wood River.

That's all I've got for now. I'm heading back up to Idaho tomorrow and I made sure to pack the lanyard cam. After some airplane camping this week, I'll be picking up the bike and heading north to discover some new Idaho backroads next week.

Those pictures are great. That last one of Big Wood river is stunning.

Don't remember the Big Wood river. Is that a new one ? Are we growing new rivers in Idaho ? Maybe I ought to get around more.

Mike

FR....Nice pics! I believe I've stood at that same spot where you took the pic of the Sawtooth Valley. I was on the Salmon this past weekend in Alpine Wyoming and took the XR1200 out at 6 Am on Saturday while the family was sleeping and rode from Alpine Junction to Hoback Junction, about 30 miles one way. It was in the low 50's, the road was newly paved and no one was out there. The XR pulled like a freight train in that cool air with the Salmon running on my right side as I was heading north. One of Americas great rivers!

Great pictures, Flynrider. You've clearly mastered Imgur. By the way, it sounds terribly cool when you say, "I spent last week riding my CB from Phoenix to Emmett, ID where I left the bike in my friend's garage. I'll be returning in my plane this week." That means, I guess, your personal A380. (JK)

Frulk, what follows must prefaced by the statement "My mother would have said ..." which may well indicate that what I'm going to say will either:

(a) raise some issues; or
(b) run the risk of you thinking I'm a Harley knocker.

Notwithstanding, I have to say it: that Harley is fun to ride? Right?

Awesome pics Flyn and Frulk. I love riding in the western US. Everyone should try and do it at least once. Many times if they can swing it.

Hey guys, I'm back online after some plane camping in Montana. I made my way back to the CB in Emmett and I'm back on the road again (with the lanyard cam this time!).

I wish! If a had one, I'd be able to take the bike with me instead of all this crazy shuttling business. Big Grin

GMike : The Big Wood River runs south from Galena Pass through Sun Valley (Ketchum, Hailey, etc...). That pic was taken about 100 ft. from my tent.

I love that area! The scenery around Hoback Junction sometimes makes it hard to keep your eyes on the road.
