I like to have a shield on long trips, just to reduce the fatigue of hanging on all day at highway speeds. My summer shield is the small NC deflector, which eliminates the wind blast from my chin on down. No arm or hand protection, but it gets the job done as far as highway wind blast is concerned.



For long road trips, I go with the greater protection of the NC Plexistar 2 (top one of your pics). I find that the increased coverage comes in handy in weather. Ride into a wind/rain/sand/bug storm and you can tuck yourself in behind the shield and stay out of most of it.



It's mostly a person preference thing. For me, hanging on at speeds over 65 mph gets tiring if I'm going to be doing it for hundreds of miles a day. Beyond that, you gotta decide whether you want to go with the bare minimum or you want substantial protection.

JPT, here my CB1100 loaded up for a trip where camping was involved. If I'm not camping I don't take the tent and groundsheet (orange & blue things on top) or the chair (green bag between top box & duffel). If I didn't have the top box, I'd probably survive with just the 60L duffel.

As you can see I don't run to a screen but on long trips I try to stay off the highways.

I like the looks of it - and the batwings covering the grips. My Burgman with the Givi windshield has those; and they are worth a lot.

It looks like it's easy on/off. Hope so. I'm seeing the pattern: Up to 55, the CB is a great ride naked. Faster it's a little windy; and above 70...I start wishing I was elsewhere.

The thing has performance potential. Yesterday up between Paradise and Ravelli, on a straight stretch, I got it up to 100. No complaints from the bike. Rider had a few.

Hopefully this windscreen will help make it at least workable as a tourer.

I've done trips both ways with a shield and without. If a lot of freeway work is involved a shield is nice. I find the limit for me without a shield to ride comfortably is about 70 miles per hour. Below that no shield no problem, above that it's nice to have something to break the wind up on my chest. That doesn't require a big shield and even a dart screen does a pretty decent job I am told. A shield with a top edge 10" or less above the ign. The other alternative is a really big shield, like a plexifairing at least 20" above the ign. In between you get buffeting and flag flapping noise. At least that seems to be the common consensus.

I use a set of small saddlebags, tank bag and tail pack that will hold 5 days worth of stuff for me, but maybe not for someone else. It depends on how much extraneous stuff you want to take. The CPAP you are taking would require a tail pack or saddlebag by itself.

A good rain suit, a change of clothes, a toothbrush and some deodorant, my medicine, some maps and a credit card is basically all that's essential, but I usually carry a more than that.

I just added the Puig Plus shield to mine and it made a nice difference. It sits 12" above the ign and takes less than 5 minutes to put on or take off. I think it looks okay on the bike, but prefer nothing as far as looks go.

if i crouch down a bit i am in the still air of the shield.
if i stretch up a bit i feel the turbulence on the helmet.

at normal sitting i feel a bit rough at 65 mph and at 75 mph its a little worse.
took the shield off as soon as i got home.

+1 on these comments. I use a Road Comet 1 fairing with the standard screen. It's 9" above the ignition and it does a great job of taking pressure off my chest while keeping my helmet in smooth air. The touring screen is 2 or 3 inches taller and has a curved up edge. Instead of making the ride better it made it worse by putting my helmet in turbulent air. I went back to the standard screen and it's all good.

Djs, I'm betting if you took that shield off altogether and test road it, you would find it pretty good. If it were me, I'd trim that shield 4 to 4 1/2 inches off the top, and you'd probably like it alot.

For 3 years I used a CPAP machine. Travelling with it was a PITA and sleeping with it was worse. Camping and backpacking were out of the question. A buddy told me to try a $25 dollar plastic mouthpiece from puresleep.com and it was a miracle. It moves your lower jaw slightly forward when you bite into it and keeps your airway open better than air pressure. You can put it into your pocket, no batteries, no hoses, no need for electricity, and when you go to bed at night you don't look like a deep sea diver. I sleep better and can roll over without getting a hose wrapped around my neck.

Try it and it will change your life bro.

Sleep apnea sufferer here too. Was diagnosed at 23 with mild sleep apnea. Been using the CPAP every night since and it does help me not feel so dogged in the mornings now. Did you use that mouthpiece after using the CPAP and felt the same effect? Going on a road trip and would love to not have to lug that machine around as I'm riding 2-up.

Hi Chip, I also have a RC2 and just yesterday in fact ordered a touring screen. My thought was it would improve things but now Im not so sure...I may be able to catch it before it leaves. I'll have to decide soon..
