I had both the surgery and radiation treatments. The surgery was a piece of cake, I was put to sleep at 8:30 AM and woke up at noon. The next day I was home with no pain.

A half a year later another doctor was concerned my PSA number had creeped from 0.06 to 0.08. Up to 6 is considered normal and this was less than 1. Had I know what the 34 radiation treatments were going to do, I would left it a bit. I also got stabbed with a large needle that removed all the Testosterone from my body. I went in a 73 year old male and and came our 74 year woman with menopause. Sever depression and mood swings that almost destroyed my marriage. Diarrhea and frequent urination that left me house bound. Frequent hot flashes and night sweats that made eating and sleeping difficult. That doctor prescribed pills that either did not work or made things worse.

Fortunately the surgeon on one of his 6 month calls came to my rescue. He gave me a shot that removed the hot flashes and night sweats in less that week. With his help all of the problems were dealt in half a year.

So if you are contemplating which process to use, I would recommend the surgery, and avoid some radiation doctor that is looking for a lab rat to test.

I FULLY agree with the above Post from Nortoon , if you are strong enough for the surgery than that is the way to go . My testosterone level is still very high after just the surgery. I have my PSA checked every 6 months now and still very low .

I don't understand..if you have your prostate removed, how can your PSA increase... PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen

To put it simply : there could be some prostate cells left after the surgery and floating around in your system and/or already have settled in other parts of your body.
It does not matter what kind of cancer we are talking about , you are never cancer free after surgery/treatment it is just not detectable but could return , sometimes YEARS later.

wow.. lots of scary stories out there !! .. I dont know my PSA numbers, but the doc seems to think, no cancer.. so I am slated to go under the knife on April 1st.. no joke .. after my CT scan, my doc told me that my prostate was pretty large.. maybe 100 grams or cc's, what ever the measurement is.. so we will see how the prostate artery embolization (PAE) works out..

Chuckk, nowadays prostate removal and some others are handled by laparoscopic surgery… unlike in the old days, they were performed by a knife.
My Australian friend did this 1-2 years ago and he is very happy so far ... with a PSA of 0.01.
You should know your current PSA number as this is very important to you.
Ask your doctor about it ... act quickly and don't hesitate because time is the key to your success.
Houtman, as a patient, is very well informed about this issue.
GOOD LUCK to you and others and we all keep our fingers crossed for everybody's success and speedy recovery...always Thumbs Up

P.S. Scary has big eyes, that's all it is....myself, had total of 9 surgeries/procedures, big and small.....and still running like CB1100

The only hollow ticking sound I can hear in my body is my heart pumping bloody fuel through my vascular system ...Smile
