Second gear whine.
#1
Just wondered if anyone else experiences a gear whine in second gear. I get bikes have straight-cut transmission gears, so this is normal to an extent, but in second gear only, my whine is probably twice as loud as in the other gears. It's not abnormally loud, or getting worse, just a little disconcerting I guess.

I don't notice more "whine" in second on my bike. I wear foam ear plugs all the time so maybe I'm not hearing what you hear.

Kmoney.. I have not noticed it, but I'm never in second gear for very long. What are the circumstances where you notice it on yours? I will try and duplicate on todays ride.

It's just a gear whine (like a supercharged car sound, or if you back up fast in an MT car), proportional to load and RPM, but more pronounced in second only.

I actually usually wear ear protection as well, I just forgot it yesterday and of course can hear every single little noise...

What I mean was, were you riding in second for an extended period at a given rpm or speed? or coasting in second slowing down? Was the clutch in or out?

What were the circumstances, what was happening, when you heard it?

Sorry, it varies with load and speed only when in second gear -- clutch out, accelerating. It's there from 2-3k probably up till redline, but the exhaust overpowers the noise after a while, so I can't tell. No shifting issues or grinding etc... , and goes away as soon as you unload the gearbox, i.e., back off the throttle and coast in second.

OK on todays ride we rode thru a little river town. Probably a mile long or so, 25 mph speed limit, two traffic lights. I stayed in second gear the whole time except for when I shifted to first and stopped at the lights. Otherwise from maybe 15 mph to 30 mph all second gear on and off the throttle, coasting, clutch in, clutch out, and I didn't notice any whine. Sorry.

My CB1100 does whine in second gear, but I don't stay there long so it doesn't bother me much.

My '99 Valkyrie REALLY whined in just about all of the gears during acceleration. I put over 95,000 mi. on the bike so I guess it was normal. I figure on the CB it ought to be normal too.

Yeah. Oh well, drive it and monitor it, as they say... Thanks for all the replies.
