Although this is not motor cycle related I will ask the Forum for some advise.
Late September or early October I have to drive to Apache Junction to finalize a family issue.
I will be traveling by car from Asheville NC and will only have so much time , no time for site seeing and I will be there for only one hour.
My question is : should I stay on I 40 and than I 17 South or at Holbrook go to Snowflake , Show Low , Globe and than to Apache Junction.
This is a shorter trip but could this be a much slower due to traffic and mountain roads ?
Time is more important than gas as I will come right back to Asheville.
Any info would be very much appreciated !

The Interstates should be the quickest. I-40 to I-17 to I-10 to US60 to Apache Junction. There may be congestion on I-17, but it will still be faster than the other way. On the other route you will be going slowly through small towns. It may be more scenic, but it sounds like you are not coming to enjoy the scenery. ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportatin) has a good website and Facebook page which would help you avoid road closures or accident-related traffic problems. Have a good trip, my friend.

Just took that route (I-40 to 377 out of Holbrook) - not a bad route to take and really not that much slower. Plus, on 260 there is a look out just before it dives down off the rim. A nice quick break. Impressive views.
Most of us in Phoenix do what we can to avoid I-17; especially on a Sunday (if your heading south).
Plan B, 87 out of Winslow, then hang a right at 260 - I'm not keen on 260 through Strawberry and Pine to Payson - you end up in Camp Verde and back to I-17. But taking 87 to Payson then down the hill to Fountain Hills and on to Apache Junction would not be that bad. More straight forward than using I-17 for you.

Rboe is right about I-17. It is hit-or-miss. Last Sunday I drove up it to Prescott and it was very smooth. Still, there was one spot where everything stopped and we inched along for a few miles until we got past a car that had pulled off to the side and a service vehicle was parked behind it. It can be very exciting when everyone is doing 85 or 90 and suddenly everything is stopped. There are those times when someone doesn't get stopped and the road is closed with no way around or off for four or more hours until they can clean up the mess and open the road again. So take water and toilet paper. Most of the time it is good, but people go too fast and there are steep grades where the trucks and RVs slow everything down to a crawl and people coming up behind still doing warp-speed and thinking they will find a way through. Like I said, it is a gamble. I still think it is the fastest way, but it may not be the easiest on your nerves.

This is a trip I would prefer not to have to take but sometimes in life you have to do something which hopefully turns out for the better .
