2019 West Coast Rally Plans (Recreation)

2019 West Coast Rally Plans - kennyw - 02-11-2019 05:23 PM

Location: Black Canyon Motel, Montrose, CO
Dates: June 18-22 with official rides Wednesday through Friday, check-in Tuesday night, check-out Saturday morning

From this central location we can hit 3 of the top 4 routes in Colorado

Route 1: San Juan Mountain Skyway

Route 2: Grand Mesa - Colorado State Route 65 and Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Road - CO 141

Route 3: Black Canyon Run, Montrose to Gunnison, Highway 50, and Gunnison to Crested Butte

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Flynrider - 02-11-2019 06:39 PM

Sorry I'm going to miss this one. Dates conflict with my annual fly/camping trip with my airplane buddies.

Too bad as Montrose is actually a pretty short ride from here (compared to previous years).

The back roads on the western slope are some of the best, particularly that run from Durango to Ouray on 550 (watch out for the deer. That's where they got me!).

The weather should be excellent in mid June (and too early for forest fires). I feel bad that I'm not going to be there. Sad

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - LongRanger - 02-11-2019 10:56 PM

Yikes, you'll only be five hours from me (great routes by the way) but I'll be attending my niece's wedding in Vail that weekend. Otherwise, heck yes, I'd be there!

May I suggest an alternative to Route #3. Except for the stretch between Crawford and Blue Mesa Reservour, which is not to be missed, Route #3 really isn't that great. Instead, consider a loop to include the Silver Thread Scenic Byway (CO 149) -- Montrose to Blue Mesa Reservoir to Lake City to South Fork to Pagosa Springs to Durango to Montrose. A nice long day in the saddle and absolutely stunning, especially as you follow the headwaters of the Rio Grande from 10,889' Spring Creek Pass down to Creede and South Fork. There's only one opportunity for gas between Montrose and Lake City (in Cimarron), so plan accordingly,

Heck, I think I could make that. Beer

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Jonz - 02-12-2019 06:55 PM

Kenny this looks great! Thanks!
I think I can rally again this year, but I have to wait a bit before I can say YES. The timing and location are almost perfect, if I can convince Lesli to come then it's for sure a Yes.

Looks like a good ride and a long day. My main goal was to include Crawford to Blue Mesa Reservoir. As long as the group is ok with a long ride.İmage

Bravo, Kenny, for the planning you put into this.

I want to say I can be there, but I'll need to look at some things first. Just getting there will take me two days of riding.

And if we get a group from Seattle/Portland wanting to trailer out, I have a 1 ton extended cab truck and 20 foot flatbed.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - LongRanger - 02-13-2019 12:51 PM

Kenny, that's a great route. For those unfamiliar with the area, the route crosses the Continental Divide in two locations and climbs mountain passes totalling 73,600 vertical feet (Slumgullion Pass 11,530', Spring Creek Pass 10,889', Wolf Creek Pass 10,857', Yellow Jacket Pass 7,785', Molas Divide 10,910', Coal Bank Pass 10,640' and Red Mountain Pass 11,018'.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - tnelson99 - 02-13-2019 03:00 PM

Maybe next year. Driving 1200 miles east from Oregon to Colorado is the wrong direction for this cowboy.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Roper - 02-17-2019 09:45 PM

I'd really like to go. The dates look good and Montrose is only 5 hours from where I live it UT.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Roper - 03-09-2019 07:07 PM

Okay. I plan to meet Django in Moab and ride together to Montrose. When do we need to book rooms?

I would book as soon as you feel comfortable. I did not expect a big enough crowd to reserve a block of rooms this time. Current pricing is hovering around $95-105 per night.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Django - 03-12-2019 07:01 AM

Would it make sense to book a double room to reduce costs?

If you have someone that wants to split a room with you, that can be done. You just have to ask for a volunteer.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Django - 03-19-2019 04:49 AM

Well, a room with 2 queen beds in the Black Canyon Motel would be around USD 420 for 4 nights (Tuesday June 18 until Sat June 22), as I just looked up at their homepage http://blackcanyonmotel.com/

Would somebody volunteer to share that room with me? I only snore when I'm really drunk. Smile

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Frulk - 03-23-2019 02:15 PM

Why do I envision the Canadian Contingent of our membership arriving like this at the West Coast Rally in Montrose Colorado? It probably is a pretty accurate representation of us Americans, considering most will arrive first.

That's Ferret looking out of the window at Lord Popgun marching his boys in..... their bikes are being trailered and will be along shortly.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Lord Popgun - 03-23-2019 02:36 PM

Man, the Canadians made us look bad in that, huh?

RE: Tentative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Frulk - 03-23-2019 02:40 PM

And frequently in sports that include ice as a playing surface.

Regardless, the movie is probably closer to the truth than many of us would like to admit...We were both on the same team so it worked out....

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Cormanus - 03-23-2019 03:06 PM

It must have been because the Canadians were pretending to be Scotsmen.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Lord Popgun - 03-23-2019 03:13 PM

Well Cellar Master, better make sure there is scotch laid in.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - GoldOxide - 03-23-2019 04:06 PM

Scots, Irish, Brits, ... heck, Canadians flew the Union Jack until 1965. I suppose the Quebec French weren't unhappy to see it gone. Nevertheless, the Union Jack is still a part of many provincial flags.

Scotch, rye whiskey, yeah, bring it out. Beer

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Perry - 03-27-2019 07:11 PM

I'm not going to be able to make this ride, but my son and I did some of those roads when we did a loop around the west on my VTX a few years ago - absolutely beautiful! Have fun!

What kind of gear would you wear at those routes end of June? What temperature range would to be expected?

Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - kennyw - 05-08-2019 07:38 AM

This time of year, it can be chilly in the morning and on top of the mountain pass and hot during the day. I would pack gear that covers 40-90*F plus rain gear. The key is layers.

Last time I rode through Colorado mountains in June, I was caught in a storm but couldn't find my waterproof liner for my riding pants. Once I was soaked, I was miserable. Once I got out of the mountain pass, the sun was out and I was able to dry out and warm up.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - GoldOxide - 05-08-2019 07:17 PM

Nothing worse than a soaking wet and tight riding crotch.

Wrong.

A soaking wet and tight riding crotch in a leaky set of rain pants mounted on a tic tac in cool/cold climate.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - cessnet - 05-10-2019 08:33 AM

So we are about one month out! Is this firming up now? Looking to ride up from phx if anybody is so cal or AZ?

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Django - 05-10-2019 08:57 AM

Tuesday June, 18 I plan to meet up with Roper and maybe kennyw in Moab at the Moab Diner, right on Main St. (US 191) for lunch.

From there we want to ride to Montrose.

However, no room booked so far. Has anybody else booked a room already?

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - cessnet - 05-10-2019 09:27 AM

Beer I’m contemplating meeting you guys in Durango for a leg, but not all three days from Montrose... will camp and ride around outta and Telluride since I’ve driven all those routes and can’t take too much time for a whole week of cb comradeship

Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - kennyw - 05-13-2019 05:48 PM

Come on up, I can PM you my number to coordinate.

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - glennrcompton - 05-20-2019 06:31 PM

With Django managing to make it all the way from Germany, I feel I've got to at least consider the logistics. Might there be anyone from the San Francisco Bay Area interested in making this trip?

RE: Tenative 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Django - 05-21-2019 01:58 AM

Any chance you want to ride up North from Los Angeles and ride through Yosemite on the way to Colorado?

RE: 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - Django - 06-01-2019 03:19 PM

I guess I'll be in Yosemite at Saturday, June 8th already, then taking highway 120 (if open) to go down to Lone Pine, not to Colorado. I want to go to Death Valley, Route 66, Grand Canyon and Utah before the West Coast Rally.

On Tuesday, June 18, I meet Roper for lunch in Moab and then heading to Montrose. May be, you want to join there?

RE: 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - kennyw - 06-10-2019 11:04 AM

One week away...

Hi Kenny:

I've not yet decided if I have enough time to ride out to Colorado rather than drive with the bike in tow, (I'm pretty sure I can go much further in a day driving). Can you tell me whether we'll be taking "Route 3" on the 19th? If so, I can keep west from Hotchkiss and should be able to make Green River before dark, which gets me close enough to make it home by Sunday night.

Thanks,
Glenn

I was thinking the optional route 3 from post #6, but none of the routes are set in stone for any given day. In the past, the group has always met for breakfast and decided on the days route.

I will be trailering out myself, with my anniversary on Saturday and funds a little tight this year I decided to find ways to make it a working vacation and haul vehicles each way to pay for the trip.

Thanks for that update. Watching the national weather this morning I think it might be best to trailer out regardless. See you Wednesday morning!

I hope to join the Moab “Lunch Bunch” on Tuesday, departing Roseburg Oregon at daybreak on Sunday on the ‘14 DLX. The Moab Diner is rumored to have the best Hatch Chili Sauce north of Santa Fe. With these pass elevations I should have thought of oxygen for both bike and riderDodgy

If anyone is planning on meeting Django and I for lunch in Moab on Tue., we'll be at the Moab Diner at noon. Departing for Montrose immediately after.

We're taking LR's route to Montrose, so it looks like we should get there around 6:00 PM.

See you there!

Hey, the first black CB ever to attend a western rally! Good going, Glenn!

Kenny told me we're meeting at 7:00 AM at the coffee shop.

Arrived a little late and a little damp tonight with Django and bikesnboats, but still in time for dinner with Kenny and Haystack. Fun was had by all. Can't wait to hit the road again tomorrow.

LOL... I've been watching Django's trip with great interest. It seems to me that his riding days start much later than mine would, especially given the midday temperatures of the areas through which he's ridden. It's possible, though, that I'm not reading his Spotwalla data correctly.

Have a cup of coffee, Flynrider and remember that some of us are in a 9x9 cubical right now.

I love Gunnison and the Black Canyon. If you're hiking around there and find a hat from the Gorge Fly Shop in Hood River, OR it's mine. It blew off my head and into the canyon in 2004. Loved that hat.

RE: 2019 West Coast Rally Plans - LongRanger - 06-19-2019 02:17 PM

Awesome. It looks like you're riding the loop in a clockwise direction. If so, instead of taking US50 to Delta / CO92, consider taking I-70 eastbound and exiting at CO 65. Follow CO 65 over Grand Mesa. It meets up with CO92 and you can then resume your route east to Hotchkiss / Crawford / Black Canyon / US 50 westbound.

I enjoyed meeting you guys in Montrose! Thanks for letting me crash the party (not literally).

Departed Montrose at 8:30 this morning and pulled into the driveway at 3:00 this afternoon. My return route was 327 miles (US 50 east over Cerro Summit and Blue Mesa Summit, then over the dam and north on CO 92 along the Black Canyon to Paonia, then up and over McClure Pass (CO 133) to Carbondale for gas and lunch (not "lunch and gas"). Then, up Glenwood Canyon to Vail, where the heavens opened and had no mercy. Cold, heavy rain all the way over Vail Pass until the other side of the tunnel, about 35 miles. Fortunately, it wasn't raining in the tunnel, and no traffic. I was still chilled when I got home but that was a great 24 hour, 600-mile round trip!
