Thanks. I knew there had to be some like minded people here.
The 300 was actually pretty good at what I was using it for, the first leg of my commute, a short 3 mile ride from home to train station. About 45mph in 6th is its sweet spot and it will get up to that speed pretty quickly. Riding it on the freeway however is a very unsettling experience.

I have the same bike. Love it. My first ride was very similar to yours. Loose the seat strap. Looks much better without it.
