2014 standard CB1100 vs 2017 CB (whatever this lovely silver/red bike is called!)
I'm sure there's a few on this forum that own both. Is there enough difference that one would want to trade up to the 2017 (or add a 2017 to the stable?)
Could someone discuss the differences? Not from a specsmanship viewpoint, but from a 'how the bikes feel different."

John Houtman should chime in. He has all three models : 2013, 2014 & 2017

Now, that would be an interesting post! Looking forward to John responding.

I do have the 2014 DLX and can therefor not comment on the 2014 standard. For me the looks of the 2014 DLX are the best . You could upgrade the 2014 by installing the 2017 forks and the slipper clutch on the 2017 is nice. I do not care for the spoked wheels because it is more difficult to repair a flat on the road. I think that it is up to you to decide which one you like : looks or slightly better ride on the 2017.

I had a '14 standard and currently own a '17ex. I didn't trade up. I would still have the '14 standard had it not developed the high/low speed idle issue. It seemed to make sense to move on because at the time, my '14 standard needed new tires, needed valve adjustment, was due for oil change, possibly new battery...so I moved on to a Triumph Street Twin, which I liked, but too small and light for what I wanted. Figured lightening doesn't strike same spot twice, so I bought a '17ex after selling the Street Twin.
Member VLJ test rode a '14 standard, then bought a '17ex and was able to outline the many improvements a '17 has over a '14 standard. I appreciated his indepth analysis of why the '17 was better mechanically and how it rode nicer, but...
For me, there's no way I can claim the '17 rides so much better than the '14 standard--not worth a trade up or having both bikes in my opinion. But then again, I think a $6 bottle of wine tastes every bit as good as a $25 dollar bottle of wine.
They both were/are fun to ride, are quiet bikes, handle great. I prefer the tubeless tires of the '14 standard, I bought the standard because I loved the look. The '17 looks nice, although I'm not a huge fan of red bikes. Visually, the tank shape, pipes and wheels are the most obvious differences. I like both looks. I liked my '14 standard just fine, and thought I was going to have it for years. I just wasn't prepared to tackle the idle issue head on.

Hopefully, I won't have to fight the high idle issue with my 2014 Std. She's now showing slightly more than 9500 miles on the odometer, and seems to run better the more the miles add up. Time will tell.
Thanks for your comments re the differences between the 2014 Std and the 2017 model. BTW - I have the same issue with wine ..... once the price exceeds $10.00 (or even $6.00) I have a hard time discriminating between them and the pricier stuff!

I like the sound of my 2017 EX. Not obnoxious, but certainly not Honda like.
I cleaned and waxed the chain on mine a couple of days back. The shiny metal chain guard is easy to remove (two bolts) and cleans quickly inside with chain cleaner. Having the guard off makes it easier to wax the chain as well.

The sound of the CB is sweet when wound up nicely.
