Powder Coating Chrome Fenders - riggies_imp - 07-02-2018

Has anyone gotten their fenders powder coated? If so, were you able to do the tail light housing?

How did the black match the bike? Or better yet, how does it compare to the Honda Japan fenders that can be ordered through Samurider for a cool $500 plus shipping?

If anyone has any experience with this, let me know. I have a local powder coater that will be much less then purchasing the new fenders, so would like to go this route. This all started with seeing Rotor’s Canadian Checkerboard CB that has black fenders, looks awesome so I’m going to copy it.

At least 2 members did. Nemo was one, and this member had one: http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=12551&pid=207956#pid207956

Maybe ask them.

just throwing out another Idea to powder coating .
wrap can be reversed if you change your mind

Appreciate it. Spoke to a few powder coaters and apparently black is a basic color that changes with the level of gloss chosen. If anyone has had it done, what level of gloss did you choose?

I’m on my phone so I’m not totally sure what I’m looking at there, maybe a rusted out new Valkyrie which is unfortunate. I had not considered wrap, but I’m not real worried about reverting back to chrome. Appreciate the idea though. Got a quote for $300 to wrap the fenders, seems pretty steep. What do you think?

that's a rusted "looking" wrap I would think. Perfect paint underneath the vinyl.

Plastidip spray could work too, if matte looks are preferred... I vaguely remember a forum member spraying plastidip on some part of the CB. Good thing is this is reversible like the wrap.

I can’t do the plastidip thing, but I’m willing to give the wrap a try. I ordered some 3M wrap in gloss black to try doing it myself on the front fender. I’ll let interested parties know how that goes.

Irony? Cover a perfectly good paint job with a wrap that makes it look like a rust bucket?

Maybe so potential thieves / vandals will leave it alone?

Things may have changed in the past few years. For several years, I picked up old bicycles and rebuilt them. I usually had the frames bead blasted then powder coated. The shop I used told me that powder coating over chrome is not really successful. I don't know the chemical reason behind it. That's just what they told me.
