Sena 10C Helmet Comm w/Camera ? - bflint - 05-16-2018

Any of you folks think the Sena 10C Helmet Comm w/Camera is a viable 2-in-1 product for touring? My current opinion is that its older technology and doesn't do any one thing great, but does multiple things adequately.
*
I don't have a helmet comm and would like one for getting audio driving directions from by Apple iPhone (especially when driving in cities). Additionally have seen various GoPro type motorcycle videos and slideshows that look cool.
*
Think I would use the following features:
Bluetooth Comm
Photo Time-lapse
Video Time-lapse
FM radio (can only loop thru mp3's for so long).
*
Thanks for whatever thoughts youve got. Smile

I can't speak to video since it doesn't have a camera, but my Sena 20S EVO has been outstanding for FM radio, BT connection to my iPhone for hands-free telephone and music (and to my RT's factory audio system and GPS, which I don't use), and for BT rider-to-passenger and bike-to-bike intercom. The audio quality is excellent and folks on the other end of a phone call have no idea you're on a bike. Highly recommended.

I have been using 10C for about a year, something like 6k miles. First thing you need to know, it's a dashcam, not an action camera. If you want to do cool video editing stuff, buy a GoPro or equivalent. But if you want a reliable camera running in the background, 10c is your rock. What is a dashcam you ask? Well, its main function is recordkeeping, and it records continuously, overwriting old footage. The amount of footage is directly proportional to the amount of storage on your SD card. My 128G card will record about 14 hours before looping. You can save current video with a push of a button, in case you happen to film something really cool. There is also a push button screenshot function, it comes really handy.

And as mentioned above, Sena is a rock solid bluetooth technology. With 10C you can connect to 3 more people (on Sena devices), which in my opinion is the most amount of people you want talking at the same time on the road Rolleyes We have 3 of these in my rider group, see our collective impressions below

Pros:

- dashcam function. You don't have many motorcycle options in that category, period
- will record and charge at the same time. Sounds like a no-brainer, but $400 gopro does not do that
- solid bluetooth
- amazing microphone, especially if you're in full face
- rugged. Mine hit the ground at 65 mph and broke from the mount, but still works (this may be a contributing factor to the issue below)
- app controlled, change settings and preset radio stations on a fly
- has voice command function, but I never bothered with it
- amazing tech support

Cons:

- Wind noise. You have a box attached to left side of helmet, and you'll be reminded of it at high speeds
- App group function doesn't work, SENA tech support couldn't make it work
- bluetooth has trouble connecting to other riders sometimes, and occasionally will forget a connected device, forcing you to pair again. It's rare, but happened few times
- speaker wire is very think and I had one speaker stop working in under a month. replacement speaker set is still going strong, replaced under warranty and is now secured with tape, which I recommend you do as well
- camera has no manual focus or any adjustment whatsoever (other than lens positioning) Just this past month I noticed that camera doesn't focus as well as it used to. SENA is replacing the entire unit for free, but if it happens again next year, it'll be out of my pocket. Out of focus video is still going to be very much admissible in court, but you're not gonna read license places from it
- PRICE. While $350 is a fat pill to swallow, you can find them for something like $260 on Ebay and store clearance sales. That's what I paid for all 3 of our units.

If you're touring, this is the camera for you. Or anyone, really. If you're a fairweather sunday rider, just record with your phone from handlebar mount and save money.

Hope that helps

cams like that have basical a fix focus....( wide angle with littel sensor needs no realy a focus)

gopro...why charge by take videos if you can it put direct on the power too my sony x3000 can this....( ok i guess not all action cams you can put direct on power)

noise ? every good video you must cut after.....so you switch off the original sound and put musice on that place for example

-------------------------------------------------

if is realy the video the reason......so take a sep. good action cam bcos they are build extra for this. very good anti shake , sep. in for micro , better imagequality ..and and....

my sony i can remote with a mobilephone.....or with/on the cam remote i have i display and see what i take ...this remote i can take on my wriste or any place

I just googled sony x3000 and it's an action camera, same as gopro. With remote it's $540.

RE: Sena 10C Helmet Comm w/Camera ? - bflint - 08-04-2018

Just got back from xcountry trip with the Sena 10C installed on my helmet. First off, I am not a video/multimedia guy. Second, I drive above 75mph 99% of the time. I only used Bluetooth for Gooble Maps when driving under 55mph and within cities for turn-by-turn directions ... this worked ok. I did all my video/pics in 720 not HD because of posting/uploading size concerns. All my videos had high wind noise when posted, could not here a word i spoke. All pics where just adequate. Bought adapter for Sena10C micro card to allow connection to my iPhone for review/organizing/posting ... this worked ok. Overall, I would probably not recommend this for folks who travel faster than 55mph because of wind noise, plus there is no "safe" way at high speed to figure out what you are videoing or whether your video is recording or not. I love the footprint and all-in-one concept because I am a simple guy, but it really doesn't work well folks. If I decide that videotography is needed (wanted) for future trips I will have to invest in a GoPro type device and a bigger phone screen device (currently using iPhone 5s). Nothing ventured, Nothing gained. I was glad I at least tried it. Smile
