Fender colour change - Buzzard Biker_imp - 01-16-2020

Hi all,

One of the first things I want to do when I have my 2013 CB1100 delivered is to change the chrome fenders and tail light cover.

I know I can buy/import a kit from samurider but that would be at about £320 plus shipping.

I am thinking of alternatives and wanted to ask what other owners have done with their bikes.

The alternatives are:
Remove the parts and vinyl wrap them in gloss black, which would be quite difficult to do unless a pro did that. Then that negates some of the cost saving. Benefit is that if a future owner or myself want to return to chrome, the vinyl will peel off.

Or paint them which means a permanent colour change and would rely on my paint skills or the expense of a pro doing it.

Ideally I want the cheapest but also the easiest option.

Cheers

BB I had my side covers done in a carbon fiber wrap, I like the look and can remove the wrap to go back to the original silver , in the future .

Buzzard you could just try it yourself, with a bit of practice that could work since the surfaces are all convex, the trick is to have the least amount of tension in the edges so it won't shrink back, lots of video's on the web about application.

You've given me an idea, i have got some light grey wrap that i could put on the inside of the fenders for some added protection against rust.

The wrap is cheap enough so I’ve seen. So I may well just give it a go. I’ll be generous with the sizing of the wrap and careful with the wife’s hair dryer. Lol

If you plan to wrap the underside you will likely need to double layer at least due to stone chips

Doing it yourself isn't as hard as you think if you take your time. On a whim, I decided that I wanted to see what my car would look like with stripes. I ordered some cheap vinyl stripes from Ebay and put them on, thinking I wouldn't be able to do a good job, but that it would give me a 15-foot idea of how the car would look if I had the vinyl professionally applied at some point. My job actually turned out great and have been on there for a few years now.

Good to hear.
Think I'll go the wrapping route and buy enough to have a couple of goes in case I fluff it up.
I'm sticking with gloss black to match the tank and side covers.

3rd Feb delivery seems ages away....
Got a weeks holiday between now and bike delivery to keep me occupied.

I've used PlastiDip spray paints with good effect. It's durable, applies easily (not so runny), and it does peel off. Use multiple coats. Here's a vid of it being removed:

Good shout. A little more expensive than vinyl wrap but arguably easier to apply.
