What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - ride4now_imp - 09-17-2013 I finally brought the Harley back to my home in N. Georgia last Saturday... rode it back to Cumming from Treasure Island. The trip was 530 miles which I did in about 9 1/2 hours or so. No issues other than the Love Bugs were out in S. Georgia which made for a big cleanup job on Sunday and some interesting looks at the Harley dealer in Roswell where I stopped before going home. The reason I mention this is that it seems most people I tell this too, think I'm nuts for riding 500 miles in a day... even biker friends of mine just shake their heads. I can't be the only one out there who'd rather 'ride' than just cruise around looking for the newest bar-b-que joint? Ps... now I can devote my time to putting some good miles on the CB. I hate to admit it, but I've owned the bike for 3 1/2 months and don't even have 200 miles on her... I'll blame it on the heat and rain. RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - the Ferret - 09-17-2013 I've done 942 in one day..with my wive riding pillion...17 hours. That was a long day lol Feel sorry for ya on the bugs. On one bike trip to Fla in 1973 we hit the love bugs full force. Holy crap what a nasty experience. Couldn't even fill up with gas without them crawling in your mouth. RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - Scoobynut_imp - 09-17-2013 I rode a KLR650 750 miles in a day a few years ago. That's probably equal to about 1200 miles on most other motorcycles.
RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - HikerToo_imp - 09-17-2013 I think its more strange for you to only have 200 miles on the CB after a few months! RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - flynrider - 09-17-2013 I've done a few 750 mile days. It's not something you usually do for fun, but more to get from point A to point B. The first time I did it I was riding an old Kaw 750 parallel twin (i.e. a real boneshaker). It had no cruise control and about 20 mi. from home, my wrist became so numb that I couldn't hold the throttle open anymore. Had to sit on the shoulder of the interstate for 1/2 an hour (at 2 a.m.) until the feeling came back and I could ride the last few miles home. Last time I did it was on the CB750. Much more comfortable than the old twin, but still pretty painful after 12 hrs. in the seat. Both rides were at the end of long road trips and I just didn't feel like spending another night on the road, so I pushed on. I cannot understand those Iron Butt riders that do this regularly for fun. Yeah... you're probably right. I will honestly say the heat and rain through the summer has been a real pain. I haven't ridden anything very much. 95 degrees, in 80 percent humidity, with thunder clouds nearby is not fun. Now that summer is just about over... with cooler weather coming, l'll make it up. Promise.... (09-17-2013, 02:09 PM)Scoobynut_imp Wrote: I rode a KLR650 750 miles in a day a few years ago. That's probably equal to about 1200 miles on most other motorcycles. You're tougher than me... I'd say that was good for at least 1500 miles on anything else!! RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - CIP57_imp - 09-18-2013 I've made 3 round trippers from NY to NC 640 door to door. Twice on my St and once on my XX. Each trip was about 12hrs. The ST was comfy but the XX was much more fun. Was thinking of leaving the CB in NC but not sure if I should ship or ride and fly back. I think i can make it one way

I had a Sargent seat on it ('09 KLR, same as yours), otherwise I don't think I could've hacked it. 500 miles was about my limit on that stock seat, and I was in PAIN at 500 miles. RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - the Ferret - 09-19-2013 Funny thing about butt pain. Get off the bike, walk around for 20 minutes, rub some circulation back in and you are generally ready to ride some more. Even with a severe case, go to a hotel, get a good nights sleep and the next morning you are ready to go another 500. RE: What's wrong with a 500 mile one day ride? - jimigalahad_imp - 09-19-2013 You guys are stronger than I am. Went for a 150 mile ride last weekend to the beach and, while it wasn't terrible, I certainly wasn't complaining about getting off the bike. The wind over 60-65 mpph tired me out. Really made my wish I had some sort of windshield. If not for that than for the love bugs. I looked like a monster afterwards with the half-dead ones still squirming around on my jacket. Got some great looks at the grocery store. |
