CTX 700 DCT/ABS - the Ferret - 01-11-2017

Got in a short ride today as I took my ST down to the shop for some much needed maintenance getting ready for the 2017 riding season. New front tire, front and rear brakes, air cleaner, spark plugs, new fluids in clutch and brakes, new coolant fluids, and run down a coolant leak I can smell but can't see (common on high mileage ST's...mine is at 83,650) most guys just ignore it but since they will have all the plastic off, might as well look around.

I borrowed a slightly used Honda CTX 700 DCT/ABS to ride home. I had ridden one other DCT before, so I knew what it was supposed to feel like, but it still can only be described as different feeling. I rode it strictly in auto mode, ie not using the paddle shifters to change gears, but I did ride ot it in both D drive and S sport. In drive it upshifts very quickly. S sport modes holds the shifts a little longer. Upshifts and down shifts are all done automatically and all you have to do is work the throttle and brakes. You can easily feel each shift, up and down as little clunks. Unnnnnn clunk, unnnnn clunk, for upshifts..... Dnnnnnm clunk, dnnnnnnn clunk for downshifts. I really didn't care much for the feet forward riding position, and thought the ergos would not have been bad if the pegs had been 6 inches further to the rear. I had jo trouble keeping up with or ahead of traffic even, but at one point I approached a light and just before I got to it it turned yelllow. I don't like busting yellow lights but this time I was just to close, so I grabbed a handful of throttle and ...very little happened lol. Not a lot of response in Drive mode, but I made it thru before it turned red. Made it home before it started raining again.

I have been thinking about getting a smaller lighter around town, winter bike, and this is the class of bike I have been considering... SV 650, CB500X, NC700, FZ-07.
But alas this is not the bike for me. Will be glad to take it back tomorrow or Sat when my ST is done. Other than oil/filters and a couple of tires, this should get me to the 100,000 mark on the ST.

Interesting. Yours is the first lukewarm DCT review I've read. The guys on the Africa Twins and big VFR's really seem to like them (different bikes, I know).

I agree, they just aren't the bike I'd choose even though I see them quite attractively priced in the used market.

I'm used to the upright riding position, which I find most comfortable. A triple has some nice features.

Maybe its the difference between 100+ horsepower and under 50 horsepower lol

The tranny itself worked as advertised..shifted up shifted down...automatically. It wasn't seamless if by seamless that means unfelt. I felt every single gear change. I was considering a DCT 700X, because I actually enjoyed my CVT Majesty 400 which was a seamless automatic,(and yes I know the difference between CVT and DCT).. but I don't think the DCT in a low powered bike is for me.

SV 650, CB500X, NC700, FZ-07 - having ridden them all, I like the 500X. See the CB500X group on Facebook. Lots of em down there. Needs the taller windscreen at higher speeds because of the buffeting but the new model has it. SV is nice. Another nice motor. FZ07 had mushy suspension and not as nice fueling as the CB. NC had a horrid seat and I sat on one with the Corbin and that didn't feel right either. I also didn't like shifting in manually because the motor felt all smushed by the lean Cali emissions crap. Auto felt better to me. Now if they would just simply make a CB500 Classic.

I suspect that if you had the CTX with DCT, you'd paddle shift it most of the time and probably would have been in a lower gear when the light turned yellow. As you know, Cheryl's on a CTX (manual, thankyouverymuch) and on the rare occasions when I ride it, I have not had a problem with acceleration--although it's no CB1100. I don't like the ergos on it for me and I am surprised at how much Cheryl likes them since my complaint is that the pegs are too much of a stretch for me and she's shorter than I am. I guess it's about what's comfortable to the individual sometimes, not what the measurements are.

Just got back from returning the CTX and picking up my ST. It's now ready for some trippin! Only got a little wet coming home lol

Anyhow, on my return on the DCT, I paid attention where it shifted this time . On flat straight ground taking off from a light it shifted into 2nd at 15 mph, into 3rd @ 20, into 4th @ 25 into 5th @ 30 and into 6th @ 35, downshifts were at approx. the same speeds. Again this was in D mode (NOT sport mode). Roads were a little wet and I wasn't going to experiment with a bike that didn't belong to me.

Sea, yea it was a stretch to the pegs for me since I'm shorter than you by a bunch as evidenced by the Ribbers pic in your ride report. So much so, I didn't even try and use the rear brake, I just used the front. My left hand only reflexively reached for the clutch about 3 times each day lol. I actually thought about Cheryl and her bike on my ride back up to the shop, as I had a few turns to go thru. Remembering the roads I took you on in Kentucky, I'm even more impressed with her riding than I was before. The riding position is not really conducive to curvy roads and I took you guys on some doozies. She did unbelievably great... I didn't realize just how great until I rode the same machine thru some curves.

I don't think the bike lacks any power for the riding I was doing, but I never exceeded the speed limit of 45 mph. It would have been more aggressive in the Sport Mode, or using the paddle shifters, but for me yesterday and today, it was just a conveyance to get home and back, 11 miles each way.

I have ridden the SV 650 (my nephew has had 2) and the NC 700 (his brother in Nevada has one and Di and I borrowed it to ride thru the Sierra Nevada's in Nevada and Calif) and have ridden the FZ-07 at Yamaha days at my local dealer. Have not ridden the CB500X yet. Since I'm a low rpm/use the torque type rider, I am leaning toward the NC 700 (but not a DCT I'm afraid). Lots of SV 650s used for great prices though. The NC's are hard to find used around here.

I bought a new 2013 CB500XA in May 2014 for less than $6900 Canadian out-the-door. As I had ridden a lot of large motorcycles until 1989, I was unsure that this would satisfy me for long. I was pleasantly surprized! The light weight, close ratio 6-speed transmission, and good fuel injection make this bike scoot.

It is light and nimble which makes my twisty back road day rides enjoyable. Over the last three summers I have averaged 81 miles per Imperial gallon (29 KM per liter), and it has a 300 mile (500 KM) fuel range. Despite only having a 6 month riding season, I have ridden over 33,000 happy kilometers on it.

The biggest complaint on the CB500X forum is wind blast and wind noise at high speeds. This is common on most "adventure styled" motorcycles. As I am 6'2" tall I added a tall windscreen that helped push the wind blast to the top of my helmet. I found 3M E-A-Rsoft yellow neon earplugs were the best solution to the wind noise. They are very soft, comfortable, don't pop out after riding a couple of hours, and really deaden the noise to a comfortable and healthy level. CB500X models from 2016 on have a taller windscreen with vents that have improved the riding comfort for those less than 6' tall.

A number of CB500 owners had ridden or owned CTX motorcycles before buying the CB500X. They did not like the extremely low red line of the CTX as it required a lot of shifting, The motor is actually half of a Honda Fit car motor.

I dont recall shifting all that much on my nephews NC700X with manual trans, and my wife and I rode it 2 up through some tall mountain passes.

I thought the CB500x and NC 700x had similar peak hp (51 and 46) with the 5 hp nod to the 700 and that the NC also has 15 ft lb more torque at much lower rpm?

NEMO ..... You had an NC700 .. Talk to me man
