The CB750 makes Hagerty's 2021 Bull Market List - Guth_imp - 01-04-2021

I'm guessing that a few of you have grown tired of my frequent mentions of the Honda S2000 that I purchased back in 2017. My apologies for bringing it up as often as I have, especially as this is a motorcycle forum and I've been pretty clear about keeping the conversation rooted in motorcycles in general and the CB1100 specifically.

But in this case, the S2000 has actually led me back full-circle to a motorcycle-specific topic. You see, I've kept the S2000 insured with Hagerty beginning not too long after buying the car (initially I was using State Farm as they insure pretty much everything else my wife and I own). But Hagerty is much more focused in their approach and when I learned that they would cover the S2000 I jumped ship. I've kept a pretty close eye on the market since buying the S2000 as it has appreciated at an unbelievable rate since 2017. At the rate things have been going, by this summer it will likely be worth at least double the price paid for it just four summers ago. Honestly, this doesn't make sense to me, despite the fact that I'm a huge fan of the car. While I don't understand the world of car/motorcycle collecting, I do like to keep the guaranteed value of the car set accordingly with Hagerty based on the market value. As a result I'll be raising the value placed on my own car once again soon enough.

When I signed up with Hagerty, I elected to join what they call their "Drivers Club" which among other things means that I receive their bimonthly Hagerty Drives Club publication. It's actually an incredibly well put together magazine, better than most anything that I might find on the newsstand today (on those rare occasioins when I still visit the rare newsstand). At any rate, every year Hagerty produces a "Bull List", which is a cross-section of vehicles that Hagerty elects to highlight as those that they feel will do well from a collector's standpoint based on market values. This year's list featured not just one, but two Honda's. In addition to the S800 (a predecessor to the S2000 I own), Hagerty also included the CB750 (a predecessor to the CB1100 I and so many of you own). In this case Hagerty focused specifically on the Sandcast models and featured a beautiful Candy Blue Green example that had been restored from bike that had been found in pieces. Definitely a beautiful machine. Despite the fact that I've always liked the CB750's paint schemes better, I've always found the Kawasaki Z1 to be a bit sexier to my eye, yet I don't view the Z1 (or any other bike released within my lifetime for that matter) to be as monumental as the CB750.

Being a Honda fan (of both the two and four wheeled varieties) for practically my entire life, it was really cool to see Honda as a brand being recognized to this degree by Hagerty this year. You can definitely see this opinion reflected in the marketplace as well, from the S2000 to the older Civic Si's and CRX's (along with the Acura Integra Type R's and NSX's) to any number of different two-wheeled models including a number of CB's. While prices for our CB1100's sit at insanely low levels, I don't expect that to always be the case. However, just as with the S2000, my purchase of the CB1100 had nothing to do with values and how much money I might stand to gain or lose over the course of time. I simply wanted to experience these vehicles for myself. As much as I marvel at the market for the Sandcast CB750's, I'm remain plenty happy with my CB1100 and have no desire to swap it out for another bike. It's good to be a happy owner, whatever it is that you choose to ride or drive.

Understood. One of the first four pre-production CB750s fetched just over $260K USD back in 2018 and not in mint condition. A record for a Japanese bike at the time.

Time to pay attention to CB1100 corrosion? Smile

Thanks for the note Guth. Might be time to offer my ‘71 to the market. She’s no sandcast, but I’m starting to wonder if buyers are increasingly interested in paying up for similar, good condition and unmolested CBs from the same era.

I think the prices for CB1100s has been recovering slowly. It seems like used prices bottomed out in 2016, when Honda decided to clear the warehouses of '14 STD models. There were several local dealers selling them for $6K brand new, which sunk used prices into the mid $4K range. Lately, with a few exceptions, most prices are trending into the high $6K to low $7K range for standard '13 and '14 models.

When it comes to specialty insurance, I'm in the same boat (so to speak) with my plane. I also have to declare a hull value every year. I've been helping a friend search for the same model and found out that my hull coverage was about $8K below current market. The higher value doesn't benefit me because I'm not selling. Just adds more to this year's premium.

I tend to follow automobile prices much more closely than motorcycle prices. However, if used motorcycle sales are anything like used car sales, I would suspect that for truly pristine examples, bringatrailer.com might be the way to go (examples in less-than-minty condition would likley be better off selling elsewhere.) I mention Bring a Trailer (BaT) as it seems to me that he number of motorcycles appearing on their site have been on the increase as of late. BaT buyers and the BaT audience alike can be pretty brutal in their anal evaluation of vehicles, but sellers with examples that pass muster with this crowd are generally well rewarded. While that crowd can be tough, for many this route is preferable to dealing with the trials and tribulations of craigslist and the like.

That said, I sold my Hawk GT via a forum dedicated to the Hawk GT. While it's likely that I could have gotten more money in return for my Hawk elsewhere (I listed it for a reasonable price and it sold in just a day or so), the fact that my bike went to a fellow Hawk enthusiast actually was of value to me, despite it not being of monetary value. I received a few emails from the buyer subsequent to the purchase — he included photos of my old Hawk taken while out and about (he and his wife now have his 'n hers Hawks!). Despite the fact that these are just "things", knowing that my old Hawk is being well looked after and enjoyed by someone that truly appreciates it and knows how to take care of it really does make me feel good. After all, I spent 11 years taking good care of that machine. It's nice to know all that time and effort didn't just go to waste at the hands of someone wanting to molest it (the buyer was looking specifically for a primarily stock example like the one I was selling).

[url=https://bringatrailer.com/search/honda+cb750/]A look at recent CB750 sales on BaT. I would note that the buyers paid another 5% to BaT on top of the final bid prices shown here.

Interesting observations with regards to CB1100 prices, I'll be honest that I haven't been following the market closely at all as far as our bikes go. Current market values aside, I look back at the $9,999 that I paid to ride my brand new CB1100 out of the showroom back in 2013 and I have zero regrets. It was worth that to me then and I've never once regretted this purchase. I'd agree that we're in very similar boats when it comes to the insurance situation as I don't have any interest in selling either the S2000 or the CB1100. The price that I'll have to pay to insure these two is what it is. Still, the personal experience-based value that I get from both of these Honda's far exceeds their monetary value out on the market.

May be right, may be wrong, but I think the prices for any CB 1100/s could start going up once Honda has stopped production alltogether. But there is also a "generation" factor. Within the next 10 to 15 years many current CB owners will turn 70, and no longer be big buyers in the market. Whether a new generation is still interested, remains 2bc/n. After all prices are not driven by fame, but by demand.

At least the Honda scooters don't seem to be currently hindered by the Euro 5 emission standard. There is some margin for "fun" before the mobility scooter.

Not yet but can you imagine if all the old members switch their bikes for scooters...Euro 6+ might be implemented Smile

Start saving for this:

Plan for the "scooter contingency".
