Oh jeez. Thats super unfortunate. I cant see what damage he posted but tbh my concours wasn't seriously damaged. It was still practically Ridable. The thing is with used bikes and insurance claims though, they're so easy to just total out and trash. I took their payout because it was more cash than id have gotten in trade value for the bike before the accident, so it was a good deal for me.
As far as irresponsible riders being out there....yea they're worthless. The thing is I would NEVER put my CB up on riders share, nor any other bike im sentimental about. The reason I have a second bike is that it can be a bike I dont care about. That way when the worst happens (remember, my Vstrom got run over by a fertilizer truck..) it happens to another bike and NOT my precious CB. It's no skin off my back that I lost the concours, because I just got something else. But if you care about your bike in any emotional way, definitely do not put it up on riders share.

Oof. Yea sounds about the same. It all depends on the value of the bike I guess. My vstrom was hurt way less than that and they totalled it though

I am too sentimental about all my vehicles. I only buy something I have already fallen in love with and the mere thought of somebody else driving/riding it would scare the crap out of me. I even flinch when my wife needs to borrow my car.

Ha. Whoops, you need to work on that. I'm so anal retentive about our vehicles that my wife apologizes to me when she can't score an end spot in a parking lot in her own car. Recently, she apologized that the only end spot available was under a tree, and some leaves fell on it.
And since I still haven't taught her to drive a manual, no problem with my car

This can be a problem for a lot of people, and there are/would certainly be bikes that I truly love and can't let others ride, but the second bike slot in my garage has a purpose. it's a workhorse. it's intended to be flogged down highways and have its tires squared off from commuter miles and ride in the rain and ride in the bitter cold and get sand and crap all over it. It's supposed to be the bike that takes the hit when the inevitable unlucky day comes and somebody takes me out and wrecks me. I can't let that happen to my CB, so i reserve the CB for fun miles only. It's purchased with those kinds of conditions in mind. I bought it precisely because i don't want all those things to keep happening to my CB.
For those reasons, i specifically set out to purchase something that i **dont** love. I don't love a Vstrom. it's a great bike but....let's face it. it aint a stallion. it's just remarkably practical. I didn't love my concours. it was awesome and comfortable and spaceship-like and mega powerful for overtaking crappy drivers, but it was also too heavy and required too much maintenance. It was also not nearly as fun in twisties as my CB. In the same vein, i don't **love** my Versys. It's also a great bike, with loads of advantages. TBH, i have to admit, i've already had more "fun" on it than on my Vstrom or my Concours. However, "love" is a really strong word. I would probably "love" an MT07 or a Trident (god would I love a trident), but that would just defeat the purpose of having a second bike. I would no longer be able to use it as a workhorse.
TLDR; when you live on a bike sometimes you have to buy with your brain and not your heart.

My current bike I scorned for years. Shunned. Hissed at it and quickly walked away from in showrooms.
These days the thrills on it keep coming.

Precisely the reason I have the NC (quarter horse) , to keep the miles on the CB ( pleasure horse) to a minimum. After all. It already has nearly 61,000 miles on it. I want it to last until I can no longer ride.
