Question:

Any Forum folks find themselves buying, or thinking of buying a bike that really does not make any sense for them and/or is comparatively impractical to what they know better?

No.

Wouldn't this describe every bike purchase, really?

IF you shorten that to just "comparatively impractical", then everything but my R1250GS fits that description when compared against it. My '69 R60 is "comparatively impractical" when compared against pretty much everything, but I still get a real charge riding that thing around everywhere from commuting on a nice summer day to long rides on a Sunday. My CB750 is "comparatively impractical" compared against my CB1100, but I still really enjoy everything from riding it around to monkeying around with the carbs.

Ran across this video. It certainly falls into the "comparatively impractical" category no matter how you define it, but I'd sure enjoy it, I'm sure.

I bought a couple of Yamaha xs650s...when they were 30 years old. One was a complete basket case and I quickly discovered that it was beyond my limited mechanical skills. The second one was actually in decent condition and a hoot to ride...but that's about when the CB1100 came out and I thought why the heck do I want to fix up / maintain a 30 year old bike when I can have a brand new 30 year old bike? (ok, it not exactly that, but likely you know what I mean).

I bought a Triumph Street Twin, and it was simply not the right bike for me at the time and I sold it a few months later. I lost a little money, but felt it was important to get a bike I was excited about...otherwise, what's the point? I don't consider that a mistake, though. Just something I wanted to explore and then found out I didn't.

Every bike I ever bought made perfect sense to me…

These are exciting and wide ranging responses!

Ranging from Cormanus's null and void, but committed response, to Tommy's crack-up flick. (that was an awesome video Tommy Smile ).

Sounds like The Affair is alive and well in the CB1100 Forum (sans Cormanus).

For me, my eyes are always leering to the next beaut that cranks my mojo. Right now an Italian (again) just won't leave me alone, but I am a bit wiser this time around - I think.

Ahhhh yes, I wanted one of these for about 10 years and finally bought one but it wasn't me at all. It was good to look at but riding was another story so it was soon sold.

... Mixagon - awesome.

I had a strong affair with a 1986 1100 cc model.

I actually liked it a lot, and yes, it looks fantastic. Probably the largest issue for me was too much chrome to manage in wet and winter riding. In addition, it was difficult to start in sub-zero riding days which constrained the riding season.

I'm in the "every bike and boat I ever bought made total sense at the time" camp, but there were a few that began to slip into the "why did I buy this bike?" area.
