Aprilia 660 Variable TB stack kit + tune - PowerDubs_imp - 01-16-2025

I have a Tuono 660 Factory (more upright comfortable version of the RS 660)

Other than cosmetically- I have left stock.

Unlike the CB1100- it didn't come from the factory choked off- it's rated at 100hp stock from 660cc

I've watched while people have changed to many other exhausts for these bikes...and they only make a couple hp. No need.

I also don't like the look or sound of any of them...so not worth changing the exhaust to me. Sure they drop a few pounds.. but I can diet if I cared that much. Smile



But then one of the Aprilia tuner shops came out with a variable intake stack kit.

One of the issues with these bikes is a dip in the mid RPM range.

This kit appears to fix that, as well as gain some power in a usable area.

My irritation stems from the fact that motorcycles should be 'hands off' right from the start. There is absolutely no need for this, with government regulations.

This is now a 'Harley tax' for the rest of us...

Uhhh..... what??

You are going to need to elaborate... because bikes / cars....are not appliances.

I don't want hands off. I don't want it 'to just work'.

Part of the fun is customization.

We may have different ideas of what a "Harley tax" is...because to ME it means paying a big price for a low tech outdated substandard product- just for the name.

And even that term is outdated because from what I've read- Harley has really put some effort into improving their machines, and doing some interesting and innovative stuff.

I never mentioned anything about appliances. Our vehicles don't put out nearly the pollutants that the factory's that make them...or anything else, for that matter.

Getting a bike to run correctly isn't customization. Don't go there.

Harley tax was paying for the parts to set the original machine to run where the engineers know is optimal, but are being hamstrung by EPA lawmaking.

HD improving their machines, interesting and innovative?? Yikes! Not even close.

So, back to the Aprilia, why in the world are you having to spend more money, on top of your original purchase price, to get it to 'run right', as in, correct the hole in the mid-range?

Umm…. Yea, Harley has done a lot.

But that’s off topic and I’m not going to spoon feed you. Go Google because apparently you missed a lot.

As far as why bikes / cars aren’t perfect from the factory?

None are- ever.

There isn’t a car or bike ever made that can’t be improved on.

Some of the reasons include- emissions, weight, noise, fuel economy and the biggest reason- cost.

Cost of design time, production time, parts, adding up to a higher vehicle price.

In this example- the stack kit + tune are well over 10% of what the bike retailed for.

Your average rider would be fine without it and happier for a cheaper bike.

Heck- the bike itself is a ‘factory’ model- so came with better suspension. additional features, different gearing and less weight than the normal model- at a higher cost.

Most people bought the normal bike.

This is nothing new…basic economy / free market 101 and if it upsets you that much, well I’m not the person to complain to about it.

I’d appreciate if we can leave it at that and let my thread get back on topic so others can participate.

The interesting thing is- he is using fhe PAIR output from the ECU.

Once I have the kit in hand- I’m going to look close at the hardware- maybe I can do a similar setup for the CB- but can just use a trigger out from the power commander.

No, works the same as if it came from the factory

Some of the earlier V4 had variable stacks from the factory, so I’m guessing he probably used the same actuator hardware.

ADV Rider did a good story on power delivery differences between the EU and USA.

It's odd because from an emissions point of view the US is less strict (excl. CA). You will never see a bike with a carb for sale here now for instance.
