Avon RoadRider - The Spaceman_imp - 05-12-2014

Avon has an ad for their "RoadRider" bias tires in next month's Motorcyclist. They're touting them as a "performance upgrade for classic and vintage bikes.". I checked their website at http://www.avonmoto.com and they have them in our sizes. I know a couple people said they'd prefer bias ply tires. Has anyone tried these?

In the photos these appear to have the same profile and tread pattern as the Avon Venom tires I ran on my HD. Those were excellent tires in every aspect.

I had Avon bias-ply tires on my BMW R65 Monolever and they were excellent!
Usually I don't like radial tires on my motorcycles; actual Dulop tires are good for grip, but I feel they are too stiff (not good for riding comfort and feeling).
For next tire change I will get bias-ply tires for my CB 1100.

I had Avon Road Rider tires on my 79 and 80 CBX and loved them !
Also use Avons on my 94 and 95 CB1000 and again great tires.

I use the Avon Roadriders on two of my Norton Commandos. I really like them and have no complaints.

I tried the Avon Roadriders on my 1979 BMW R100S http://www.photosbytink.com/project-s/ when I restored it.
I thought the Avon's looked sexy, many of the CAFE bike crowd run them, so I thought I'd give them a try.
I live in Los Angeles where the freeways have those famous rain groves... and the front Avon seemed to want to dance in the rain groves :-(
I took the Avon's off after a couple of thousand miles and replaced them with Michelin ACTIV http://motorcycle.michelinman.com/tires/michelin-pilot-activ
I've been very happy with the Michelin's... don't know if they are available in sizes for the CB1100?

From http://motorcycle.michelinman.com/tire-selector#s=0:

MICHELIN provides tires for more than 3000 motorcycles
... but unfortunately not for this one.

Sad

For you guys that have run the Avons, what kind of mileage did you get on the tires? I like the Bridgestones but I don't like getting only 7,000 miles on the front tire.

I've always considered miles a trade off, if you get too many miles, chances are it's not a very sticky tire and could be less safe

I consider myself mostly a radial man, but maybe I'm a little biased. Wink
