Building my own exhaust, few questions - kDiqq_imp - 08-26-2014
After looking at how expensive some of these systems are are how I'm not totally sold on the looks, I decided to just build my own utilizing the factory header. I plan to cut the header right at the weld to the cat, delete the cat, run mild steel pipe back and up following the factory exhaust routing to a megaphone-style muffler (brand TBD). The look I'm going for is perfectly represented by this V&H system. (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/9981/i/vance---hines-4-into-1-street-megaphone-exhaust-system)
But my question is, what is the pipe diameter at the cat? Before I say the measurement I got, I wanted to see if a few others got something different. Just tried pulling the OD with a straight edge and tape measure.
Once all is done, I'm going to have all the mild steel used chromed. I'm hoping I can keep the factory bronze color of the header and just chrome the steel and muffler. Oh well, may just have to chrome it all..

I checked out that link...It is too bad that V&H or Kerker do not make complete systems for the CB1100 as they were only about 1/3 the cost of the Japanese full systems. CB production numbers will likely never be high enough to warrant them tooling up to make anything for us however.
Have you checked out the Arrow Full-System or just their Megaphone Muffler?...much more reasonably priced than the Japanese equivalents.
Have you considered simply coring out the existing catalytic material? It is usually just a thin material in a honey comb cross-section. With an extension, you may be able to drill it out with a hole saw. That would save you from doing any fabrication and existing megaphones would then hook right up to the end flange.

The Arrow doesn't look bad at all! Still looking for a bit more megaphone flaring.
I'm certain something custom will be required. But that's okay. I happen to love welding and cutting

I think the diameter of the cat is bigger than it needs to be because of the restrictive properties of the cat. I had a '99 Nighthawk 750 with that V&H system that you linked to and where the muffler slipped onto the collector was not that big, certainly not as big as the collector/cat of a CB1100.

I agree entirely. Plus I'm worried about clearing the center stand and brake lever. What's the ID of the factory muffler? I havent pulled that dim..
