Slow leak and valve stem relacement? - OldF7Guy_imp - 12-26-2014

I have a slow leak on the front tire of my 750. I have looked and looked and I cant find any evidence of running over anything to cause a puncture. I changed this tire out back early last spring but it never dawned on me to have the valve stems replaced. This has to be were its leaking but I cant verify just yet. I need some more time but its all I can think of right now.

Is there some kind of rule on replacing valve stems with age?

I replace valve stems on my cars and bikes when changing tires. Cheap insurance and prevention.

Cars and trucks have tps built into the time valve, making a change expensive. At least on my cars and trucks.

Some are built into the stems, and some are strapped to the rim.
Either way you should always replace the stems even if the have integrated TMPS because the batteries have a limited life and you don't want to have to dismount your tires to replace the stems after you have already paid to have the tires mounted and balanced.

Well, I am replacing both tires come spring so I will be sure to have new stems put on the front and back. It just never dawned on me to do this back this spring and the bike is almost 12 years old now. A 3 dollar part has caused me 100 dollars worth of headaches. Yet another lesson learned. Undecided

$88 a wheel, the price of a second set of tires, most people are not replacing or replacing with old style valve and living with the dash warning light. Same as winter wheels and tires....this system will come down in price, or you can just check your air pressure .

The real pain about the whole thing is the TPMS has been MANDATED by the US government and is there by law. Gotta love the nanny state.

When we had our store we almost always replaced rubber stems
when they came in. We only had wheels come in so I always checked
stems when I was writing the work order and a couple of times when I pushed my finger on the stem it broke right off in my hand to the surprise of the customerUndecided
I always kept a large amount of different and weird stems in stock
since we never know what would come in the door!

CA, that is good advice and just something that slipped through the cracks for me. I did this the old fashioned way and busted out the tire spoons because I was too cheap to pay somebody that might have caught it or recommended it. Cheap is not always cheapest and I have had to learn this the hard way many times over in my life. Angry

Those tire spoons paid for themselves on this one tire change but I learned enough that I will never do it again if I have a few dollars in my pocket. It was a major pain in the a@@ but can be done if you are low on money and desperate. I may have been low on money at the time and dont remember but I do remember how hard it was to change a tire on your own with no help. I probably will never attempt that again. Just not worth it. Getting too old ect....
