Grip won't stick to new knurled Renthal bar - Ferrealls_imp - 06-18-2015
I put on some new Renthal ultra-lows. The left hand grip of the bars is knurled unlike the OEM bars. I can't for the life of me get the grips to stick to the knurling. I've tried WD-40, isopropyl, hair spray, silicone and last night I even broke down and used super glue. Still won't stick. It's driving me slowly insane. Anyone have any suggestions?

Wow! My dealer said if the grip is sorta loose, use super glue gel. If it is tight use the Pro Honda Handgrip Cement.
I know that didn't help. And I was glueing a Honda heated grip to a Honda bar. Hopefully someone can help.
To add, maybe you need to clean the bar end with acetone on alcohol or something first to ensure it is degreased.

Is this a typo? WD-40 is not intended to make something stick. It makes things slide off.

1st: Slide off the grips and wash them with hot water and laundry detergent and also wash the bars and make sure everything is dry.
2nd:A neat trick I use to put the grips on is to use 4-6 zip ties inside of the grip which will help slide in the grip with less friction and once its in there you pull the zip-ties out one by one and boom! You got your grips installed.
I have the renthal gold low bars on my bike and my grips don't slide and i didn't use adhesive.

Thanks ish. I've been through it all. It's not a snugness fit, it's an adhesion problem specific to the bars. I came to this conclusion after trying to use the same method I use to regrip my golf clubs - double sided tape and solvent. The tape wouldn't even stick to the bars, which is really odd. There must be something in paint of the bars that I got that just isn't conducive to adhesion.
Crisis averted though. I ended up using a paint/primer method. Two coats of self etching primer that I let set up. Two thick coats of black spray enamel on top that I did not let set up. Enough spray that it was about to drip. Grips slid right on and 2 hours later won't budge.

It's not a typo. I use it on my mountain bike grips all the time. It takes about a day to set up but the grips are solid. I'm not 100% sure on the mechanism that allows this to happen. Me theory is that since WD-40 is a penetrating oil, it absorbs slowly into the rubber compound of the grips causing a slight solvent effect. The interior surface of the grips becomes slightly more pliable and adheres to the metal bar.
Google WD-40 for putting grips on. You'll find a lot of information about it.
