Lash or play in EX or DX 6 Gear Model?? - Landy100_imp - 07-11-2015

Hi, has anybody got some play or slack in their DX or EX 6 gear model? I have slight play which can feel between gears which sure didn't get on the earlier model. Get a click at certain speeds. Maybe could lose it just by changing the oil type.

I don't think its anything to do with the chain tension (which is at it should be) or cush drive as that it pretty new. Guess it comes from the gears. Nothing particularly serious as usually get to drive around it.

Regards Landy

Maybe you can better explain what you are feeling. Having been inside many gearboxes it is virtually impossible for there to be any "play" in there. Multiple toothed gears mesh together with teeth, slots and dogs ( raised bosses that go in the slots). of course for the protection of the system inside the box, there is chain slack and rubber dampers in the rear wheel which give some, sometimes called drive line lash. If you snap the throttle on and chop it off you will feel this drive line lash, particularly at low speed, and it's most easily felt on fuel injected bikes which have no low speed circuitry to soften the transition from on to off. Could this be what you are feeling?

Check your chain alignment with a tool. Takes 2 minutes, and you can get one on amazon. Then, I would check chain slack. I usually like to see about 1/2 an inch of slack on my chains, regardless of spec. You will feel some "play" in the drive train of a chain driven motorcycle, but not the gearbox itself. Changing your oil, will not change this effect.

Also, pull the chain cover off in front to check gear wear. If your chain is not straight, it may have developed a really bad habit on the gears themselves.

Both ferret and xNEOx have it right.
It's either one or the other - or a combo of both.
There is no "slop" or "play" in the gearboxes.

Ferret,
I think you have got the correct conclusion its a fuel injection thing and I need to drive a bit more smoothly. I haven't noticed it before, and thanks for the replies!

Landy, practice smoothness, rolling the throttle on and especially off, which is harder for most people to do, but practice will make your issue a lot better. When I am shifting I don't roll the throttle off all the way to the stop just to the point where the cable tension/free play begins. You can feel it. Coming to a stop of course I roll the throttle all the way off.
