Left Side Crankcase Cover Replacement - gwallis_imp - 08-04-2015

The 2013 CB1100 that I recent bought had been dropped on both sides of the bike scratching the Crankcase Covers. When I replace the Left Side Crankcase Cover are there any surprises or problems that I should be on the lookout for?

I recently replaced the crankcase cover on a 1982 Yamaha Virago 750 and I had one hell of a time getting the cover back on. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

I have an 82 Yamaha XZ500. They, the Virago and the XZ are related believe it or not. I suspect all bikes need the same procedure for installing side covers. You have different length bolts and they go in a specific hole and must be installed in a certain order and tightened in that order at the correct torque. The service manual for that bike is critical. If you know this already then please overlook my poor attempt to help.

Not quite sure what you want. Drain the oil before removal? - yes. Sequence of work? Torque values? All the info is in the service manual. Straight forward really.

Cheers

'Thanks' for the reply. First off I am trying to obtain a service manual... and secondly, when I removed the side case off the Virago starter gears came out with the side case. Aligning it all back in place was a real chore!

Glad to hear that I will not be running into something like that with the CB1100.

Thanks again!

sorry to stray off topic, but.. umm.. is that the 'Vision' ?
If it is, I'd be interested in hearing about it !

It is the 82 XZ550 Vision. My "project" bike before getting the new CB1100 STD. I bought her off Ebay for 300 dollars. Water cooled V-twin. Beautiful engine design. The carb is a disaster. I rebuilt the starter and got lots of new parts including a rare new exhaust system. She is not running. Likely she won't since I barely have time to ride my CB1100. Perhaps when I retire I can putter around with old bikes but old bikes are never going to be a good as the CB1100, certainly the carb nor the charging nor the brakes will never be as good as the CB even when the XZ was new so likely this project is no longer a priority.

I had to replace mine, it was just a light smear of yamabond. It is a bit tricky because the stator is bolted to the inside and the magnets on the rotor want to keep it attached.
