Engine stalling at idle - dave - 09-05-2015
Was riding in stop and go traffic yesterday. Temperature was only in the mid 70's, but due to the extended time spent not moving the engine seemed to get pretty hot. I was not too concerned because I use Honda 10w30 full synthetic motor oil and believe that my engine was as well-protected as it could be. Suddenly the engine died at a stop light. It restarted easily, but it would not idle. The ide speed dropped to about 500 RPM (this is what the tachometer said). Every time I stopped the idle speed would drop to about 500 RPM and then the engine would just stall, unless I opened the throttle enough to bring the RPM up to normal idle speed. I rode a few miles on the freeway at a relaxed speed to cool the engine so I could determine if the condition was caused by over-heating but this did not cure the problem. Has anybody experienced a similar problem? I am looking through my service manual now and I'm thinking it might be the Idle Air Control Valve (page 5-74 of service manual). Any suggestions from somebody with experience with this condition are greatly appreciated.

Mid 70s? That's only warm, not hot. The bike should run normally, stop and go included, in much hotter conditions than that. In fact it does. Run through the trouble shooting procedure in the service manual. Probably require Honda diagnostics though.

I actually had mine do something akin to this once. It was 95° outside (give or take) and I ran at about 80 MPH for about 45 minutes and when I got off the freeway it stalled on me. It restarted right away, was idling really low (around 500 rpm or so) and wanted to die. It was knocking when I gave it gas, but I was able to keep it running. I got moving again and made it to the gas station and by that time it would idle fine. I decided that the craptastic stuff that California calls gasoline was to blame and I haven't put anything less than 91 (premium here) octane fuel in it since. I have had no re-occurrences and no further issues.

Dave, when you first bought this bike you reported it as "the worst running new bike I have ever purchased". Did you resolve that problem, and if so, how? Maybe your bike has an ECU problem. You did mention that you were considering a PCV. Did you follow up on that? If all is OK in the electronics department maybe you are picking up batches of bad fuel. It happens. Recently a major Sydney motorway was shut down during morning peak when about twenty cars, who had filled from the same station, came to a halt.

Thank you all for your replies and advice. Yes, this bike ran bad when new, but I corrected this by adjusting the throttle position sensor as recommended by another member on this site and it has run perfectly ever since. I took my bike for a ride the next morning and it ran fine - ideling smoothly at the normal RPM without stalling. I only use premium gas purchased at reputable (Texaco, 76, Chevron or Shell) gas stations, and I have not refilled the tank since the stalling situation. I have no clue what was causing the stalling, but it appears to have corrected itself. I'll report back to this link if the problem returns.

Could you let me know the link of how to adjust TPS please?

Procedure is:
-Make sure switch is set to run
-turn ignition on (but do not start)
-slowly twist throttle from fully closed to fully open twice
-turn ignition off
I wasn't having major issues like OP was but did have roughness at low RPM with small throttle inputs. This fixed my issue. It is much smoother, especially throttle rolloff at low speeds.

In the middle of the summer, 95 plus out, heavy traffic. My CB started knocking, got out for traffic and got it cooled down. I only had 500 miles. I changed the oil and filter that night, never happened again. It continued to idle fine while hot.
