CAP CYLINDER HEAD SIDE - sticks out, worry? - Riko_imp - 04-17-2016

Hi,

is it normal the cylinder cap on the head sticks out a bit?
Its the one on the right, the rear one.

Look at the third pic down, http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3268&pid=50735#pid50735

Blow it up. That's how all mine look.

Have you have the cover off? It looks like they weren't put in exactly right.

They all are out like the circled one. Even amount all the way around.

lol no, the cylinder head cover? no way, you don't need to take that whole thing of to reach the caps.

or with cover you meant the circle caps I believe Smile

How did you fix it? reglued it?
To be honest the picture isnt clear, I need a close up of the picture to see your caps were installed badly.

I'm getting confused. My caps are fine and as installed at the factory. That pic is a tad fuzzy, but more than adequate. Mine are the same way. You can see chrome cap and the aluminum cover/head difference and see how the cap is seated. Look closely. I couldn't find a pic on here that was perfect Smile

Are you saying the one I circled is right and should stick out, like on yours?

I must say, maybe you cannot see it good on my picture, but there is a tiny gap between the cap and the headcover...as if it came lose.
I can actually push the top of the cap in a bit...

That shows to me that its not sitting as it should.

To me the uncircled one looks in too far, but it may be the picture.

The circled one, to me at first glance, looked a little cocked.

I have not had my cover off yet, hopefully someone who has will chime in. But, the book has you put sealant at the simi-circles where the cover meets the head so just pushing or banging it back in may result in a leak. If there is a gap I'm surprised it's not leaking now.

You might have to remove the cover to get this right.
Rico, on the part pic you posted, the cap looks to have a piece that lips on the inside of the head and that would position them, and provide a seal on the bottom I guess.

Riko, below are some photos of the caps on my bike. The cover has been off three times for valve checks. All is OK and these photos may help. When re-installing the cover the packing (gasket) needs, after inspection for condition, to be replaced carefully. The cut outs need a sealant applied before reassembly.

There ya go Rico, that's exactly what mine look like.

For the record I didn't remove the packing (gasket), I left it in place and reinstalled the cover, just as I've done with many bikes over the years. The gasket doesn't wear so if you don't tear it up doing the R&R there should be no reason to replace it. Those things are not cheap. Has not leaked a bit.

Be sure to torque it to spec though.

yeah, I see on the cap piece does have a lip on the bottom, but I dont think that serves as a seal what so ever.

I think the round caps just sit against the big packing/gasket (part number 6 on the pic), you can see a 2 slight indentations on the bottom of the big gasket.
I think this is where the lip part of the round cap goes.

I think the sealant you talk about for the simi-circles is just to make them sit against the gasket...

So even if I would lose those caps, I believe you will only see a part of the gasket, so it certainly would not leak since it would still be completely sealed.

If this all is true, you do not need to remove the whole head...

I have certainly not seen any leaks of some kind in that area.

Somwhere next week I'll pass by my mechanic. Cool
