Cam cover gasket - Tezza_imp - 09-19-2016

Went for a short 40km ride on Sunday. When I pulled up there was a distinct oil burning smell. I found the left hand side of the engine covered in oil obviously coming from the cam cover gasket. I have ordered another at $60AU which i thought was pretty steep for a piece of rubber. Bike has just ticked over 40k kilometres. Might be time to check the valve clearances while I have the top off.

If you do that as recommended you should ever have a leak. Has the bike ever had one?

Checked the valve clearances at 20k kilometres and all were within spec. Bike has never leaked a drop of oil until the other day.All the cover bolts are tight so I wont know what happened until I pull the cover off and check gasket.

You are 7,000 km over the interval, so who knows.

I've had a bit of a leak from that gasket for a while. The bikes about to have a 48K service and valve clearance check and a new gasket.

I've had a leak from it that just stopped on its own around maybe 10k. Checked the valves at 17k and reused the gasket, never leaked since and now at 28k. If you park on the center stand or use a block of wood under the kickstand, it will help the oil not to pool in that corner.

Tezza, can you post a pic of that?

RE: Cam cover gasket - Tezza_imp - 09-20-2016

Too Late. I have already washed it off and did an oil change but i will post if I find anything unusual with the gasket or valve clearances.

Thats cool, I was just wondering if the sealant was applied in the 'corners' where the cover meets the cam ends when the cover was off the last time.

On most bikes you can see it where it oozed out.

I replaced the gasket today and the only sign of a leak was around the chrome cap on the left inlet cam side. I have applied some loctite gasket sealant so I will see how it goes on the next ride. Also checked the valve clearances...all are perfect at 6&11 thou.
