without draining the oil first, will I get oil draining out the filter hole? I want to switch out my K&N filter (it is slightly leaking around the nut on top, dangit) but my oil is pretty fresh and I don't want to waste it. So, how deep is that oil?
And to add to the question... I have six Honda filters that I got with the bike. They all have different part numbers, so I called the Honda dealer down the road and asked if any were the proper one. He said that there are only two filters that Honda ever made. A small one like our bike takes and a big one that works on some older bikes. So all these I have on hand are the same, though they have different part numbers on them. Is that true? I hope...
He also said that some oil would leak out but if I left the filler cap on and hurried, I wouldn't lose much oil. We shall see about that

Why not drain the oil and then re-use it? Shouldn't be too difficult to do.

May have to, but am hoping to save that step. I am the guy who will dump a gallon of oil on my pants leg
Am thinking that parking it on a hill facing up might be the ticket. We shall see!

I believe the filter is higher than the oil level but your plan to park uphill and change it fast is the best one. No reason to completely drain it. Just top it off before starting.

The oil level is lower than the filter. Just pull the filter and install the new one. 5 minute job.

It won't come out. The oil is also running from the sump to the pump, through several feet of oil galleys and possibly even the cooler before it gets to the filter. You won't lose any, save for the half quart or so that is in the filter.

Thanks all. I feel better. I'll tackle it in the early morning. I got distracted on the way to get a filter wrench. The clutch pedal went to the floor on the old Miata and things got kind of exciting for a minute. But all's well.

I've been using that same filter for about 20 yrs. (it's the same filter that my CB750 uses). The part number has changed a couple of times over the years. I think the last time was about 5 yrs. ago. The current part number is 15410-MFJ-D01. Some of the old superseded part numbers were 15410-MM9-P03 and 15410-MCJ-505.

Well yes. But I like it better when the clutch disengages at the same time. Surprise! Fortunately, there wasn't anyone right in front of me at the time. And I found neutral without much trouble. Instincts are a good thing.
