Replacing Left Side Engine Cover - will866_imp - 03-28-2018
Can anyone comment on how difficult it is to swap out the left side engine cover of a cb1100? Mine is scratched from when prior owner dropped bike in driveway. I have the cover. Dont know if this involves a gasket of some type or what. Dealer will probably do it when I am in for other service. just wondering how much labor time I should expect.

I don't have a definite answer for you about the 1100, but I swapped the left side engine cover on my CB900F, which has a very similar engine, and it was no big deal at all.
If you're at all handy with wrenches you can easily do it yourself.
The 900F has a gasket so there probably is one on the 1100 too.

Its easy as said. And there is no gasket.
Book says “engine oil will run out when the alternator cover is removed”.
When reinstalling, a sealant (Three Bond 1207B or equiv) is used on the mating surfaces as shown (in the book, not here
).And you have to be careful you don’t get your fingers mashed as the “alternator cover (stator) is magnetically attracted to the flywheel, be careful during installation”.

Not to hard , but yes it is magnetic,and bite your fingertip if not careful.

I did mine a few months ago. You need to pull pretty hard on the cover to get it off as the magnetic pull from the stator is pretty strong. Don't pry it off. The job is much easier with an extra set of hands. As mentioned by popgun, you need to apply gasket sealer to the mating surface. Once you have the cover on hand tighten the bolts then wait about 30 minutes before torquing the bolts.
