Any Electronics Wizards In The Membership? - 2017EX_imp - 06-07-2018 I had an idea for a product that apparently does not exist at the moment. I have reached out to Sena, and Mr. T, but so far cant get what I am looking for, or someone that understands the reason to make it . I am hoping that there is someone in the membership with the electronics background to make it, and of course I would be interested in feedback on the idea as well. I went from riding a Harley with self canceling turn signals for 10 years, to my CB1100EX. As much as I try to train myself to cancel the signals, what with attention on the road, traffic, clutching, braking, etc etc, periodically canceling the turn signal is at the bottom of the attention list. I imagine as experienced as many of us are, this is probably a common problem. So, I got to thinking, what about a small wireless transmitter wired into the turn signals, sending a signal to a wireless receiver for a small beeper mounted in the helmet. The receiver/beeper would be powered by a watch battery. Well,no such thing exists at the moment. Self canceling kits exist, but tend to be expensive, dont always work in all situations, and require modifying the turn signal switch with a rubber plug inside to prevent the switch from locking in the on position. Inexpensive 95 Db beepers hard wired and mounted to the bike do exist. They can be wired to the turn signals to beep constantly when a signal is on, or partially wired into a brake lamp so that when a brake is applied the beeper is canceled until the brake is released, ...example tun signal on at a stop light with brake applied waiting for the light to change. The problem with that is that with a helmet and ear plugs, plus wind and traffic noise the rider might not hear it. I did find a wireless turn signal LED strip for mounting to the back of a helmet that will light up with turn signal direction when a turn signal is activated. I mention this because it uses wireless transmitter wired into the turn signals to transmit to the led strip via wireless receiver, and at $20, is not cost prohibitive. Personally, I think that no matter how experienced and/or well schooled we are at riding, a small beeper the size of a quarter mounted inside the helmet as an audible reminder to cancel a tun signal would be a good thing. I dont think it should be, or would even need to be, as loud as the 95 Db in the example. So, small inexpensive wireless transmitters exist, small inexpensive receivers exist, small inexpensive beepers exist. Does anyone have the expertise to put all the components together for the purpose at hand? What does everyone think of the idea, and if such a thing did exist at a reasonable price would you buy one to add to your gear? Using a line level converter to convert the beeper's speaker-level output to line-level output (with variable gain pots so you could somewhat adjust the beeper output), you'd connect the beeper to the BT and then pair the BT to your Sena. The tricky part would be pairing the BT to your Sena -- you may have to forego another input source like your GPS (assuming you listen to your GPS in your helmet) in order to pair to the beeper. Would I buy one? Nope. I've trained myself to cancel my signals after every use, even on my bikes with auto-cancellation, and also periodically poke the cancel button even when they're not on. I might advocate ditching the receiver side (or offering it as an option) and providing an Android and iPhone app. It could drive an audio chime that goes to whatever Bluetooth headphones a rider might currently have. The problem with all neat, but consumer industry specific ideas is that it's much tougher to turn a buck at the likely volumes that you'll do than it will be to implement. It'd be a labor of love unless you have pockets deep enough or time on your hands enough to get into the traditional distribution channels. The problem is that the dash blinkers are often placed below your line of sight when looking down the road (as you should of course), especially when wearing a modular or full-face helmet. I think I might look into enhanced, heads-up visual indication. It would be quiet yet attention-getting, and simple. Me too. One time I showed my mom a GoPro video of a ride so she could see what it was like. Her first comment was, "Why do you keep pushing that button on the left every so often?"

I do not have or use a com system, Sena or otherwise. I also do not listen to music, or use blue tooth for a cell phone. Consequently, I have the unused recess inside my helmet ( for my purposes would only need to use one of them ). All I am wanting as a result is an audible reminder inside my helmet so that I never forget to cancel my signals. Mechanically, I can do almost anything, but when it comes to electronics, I dont have a clue as to what parts to get, where to get the parts, or how to put it together. Maybe someone here with the knowledge I dont have can put it together, and depending on the interest here ( or not ) offer it here on the forum for sale? Based on your needs, and given that it'll be a one-off thing, I'd probably ditch the Bluetooth altogether. Rig up a simple transmitter that transmits a tone anytime that either blinker is on (it would be gated at the blink rate). Put a simple receiver in the helmet attached to a speaker and "Bob's your Uncle". You'd need a battery to power the receiver, and it'll end up being a bit clunky probably, but still and all, a fun project. A quick search turned up this. The guy who did this actually didn't want the audio indication, and went an additional step to wire up an LED (he did it with his brake circuit so that his helmet lit up). For me, this would be the way to go. You already have the signal and the receiver. Whatever signal activates the LEDs can be adapted to a small "beeper" with easy electronics. Easy for an electronic guy, of course ![]() I don't think there would be much market for this, but I am sure that any electronics shop can do this for you as a "one-off", making this little "add-on" to that led-strip, or removing the X-mas functionality if you only need the sound. |
