Throttle tube easy to fit? - Buzzard Biker_imp - 01-18-2020
One of my first jobs when my CB1100 arrives is to fit some Renthal 758 bars.
Currently the bike has the OEM bars with Oxford heated grips.
So the question is, can I remove the Oxford grip from the existing throttle tube or would I need a new throttle tube?
I don’t care about the heated grips as I use heated gloves instead, so I am happy to dispose of them if I need to butcher them upon removal.
Just want to know if it can be done easily enough. If not I could perhaps buy a new throttle tube for the new bars and simply leave the Oxford grips on the old bars.
Are new throttle tubes easy to fit?

There seem to be two questions here?
1. How best to swap the throttle assembly onto different bars
and
2. How best to remove Oxford heated grips
I have swapped throttle assembly onto different bars, here...

And in it I showed how I removed the (firmly stuck!) standard grips and was still able to use them again. This might help with your Oxford grips?

Thank you Bazbro. I had a read through and found it most useful.
Did you notice if the electric controls on each side of the bar include a grounding pin?
If I buy the Renthal bar I am wondering if I will need to drill holes in the bar for the grounding pin to locate correctly.

I didn't actually notice, but being Honda bars I'm assuming so. I think you should accept that you'll have to drill the new Renthals.

Dang fiddly job.
I saw the 5Four in the local Honda dealer yesterday and it had Renthal 758 bars fitted. I asked the dealer about the grounding pin but I don’t think his answer was very conclusive other than he believed the bar already had dimples in it for the pins.
I guess I will soon find out.

Hmmm... I'm not sure...
Renthal make bars for everybody and no two makers puts throttle body pins in the same place. Unless they do a "generic dimple" and you're then free to drill another?Good luck!

Hi Bazbro,
Since I swapped out the bars to the Renthal 758 I have noticed the front brake hose has some slack which I need to take in.
I'd prefer to not go for braided brake lines just yet.
As the slack is about 1.5" I think I can look at possibly trimming off some outer brake hose sleeve and feeding/pushing the actual hose down through the little bracket at the back of the headlight. I am sure this might help a little.
Did you have to make an alteration to the brake hose or clutch hose when fitting your bars?

The difference between the two bars was minimal and the tiny amount of excess cabling and hoses just "disappeared " in the slightly different routing. The difference between the bars was obviously much less than yours.
I can confirm a "location hole" drilled in the bar by Honda, to fit the protruding pin on their throttle body.

I've taken up a bit of the slack.
As for the little hole, I chose not to drill into the Renthal bars what with them being alloy and more brittle than the original steel bars would be.
I ground off the left side plastic locating pin. The renthals come with a textured surface for some purchase.
On the throttle side I ground down and contoured the metal pin so it still touches the renthals. Throttle works fine on start up.
I read that aluminium foil helps with grip on the controls if they did start slipping about.

I would imagine that an aerosol spray of contact adhesive on the bars, allowed to dry, would then give a "grippy" surface that would stop slipping?
