Spoked wheel run out specs - Jfro5687_imp - 04-18-2020
Hi all,
Bit house bound because of the virus so entertaining myself on YouTube. Watched some good vlogs on 'how to true motorcycle spoked wheels'. I did attempt this many times as a kid when I buckled wheels on my racer pushbike with ok results so i have 'dabbled'.
Does anyone know what the actual specs are for our EX models?
Out of curiosity I went in the garage to spin up the front & rear wheels. Honda CB's are renowned for their quality, right?
Well. I am pleased to say I was impressed. Holding a pencil against the fork leg & then swing arm to spin the wheels I reckon there's no more than 1 to 2 mm movement either up or down or side to side at worst. Certainly I had no desire to 'meddle'.
I did the 'ping' test and twanged each spoke with a little ring spanner. I found one slightly dull sound so tightened that maybe 1/8th turn, 'ping' restored.
Anyone with severe OCD though, do this at your peril.

Slight update....having mulled this over today whilst doing other stuff I have just looked again at the original video that sparked all the controversy off. The owner had another YouTube video highlighting a fault where the bike cut out. Clearly he was very unhappy about that. His bike appeared a little modified although no other walk around shots were provided to us. Before I continue I will add I have a background in mechanical engineering and some experience with forensic work, and have been to many vehicle accidents over the years. On the vlog in question where he highlights a severely broken rear wheel and waggles it ....
1. If we are to believe this happened at any speed why are there no other witness marks? In other words the rim and spokes are uniformly very dirty yet there are no marks whatsoever in the dust/dirt from the alleged catastrophic failure.
2. The polished alloy hub is similarly completely unmarked
3. The rim does not appear bent, buckled, scratched at all
4. The brake disc shows no sign of any marks or damage
5. The broken spokes would have flailed about and ripped all he** out of anything they came into contact with.
6. The rear tyre appears to turn freely by hand and shows no marks or flat spots indicating it locked up or jammed
7. The CB is a heavy bike and with that many spokes broken I doubt the weight of the bike would be carried full stop. It would collapse onto the floor with significant damage to the whole undercarriage, including exhausts, sump, etc
8. Forensic and visual examination of the broken spokes would likely indicate the mode of failure.
That will do for now. Not wanting to re-gurgitate all this but seeing as we all care about the reputation of our lovely bikes. I'm not accepting this, sorry. I have my own thoughts on how this has happened.
