Another oil question - Obleo - 02-17-2020

Just curious, living in the mid-south with 95 to 100 degree temps. Has anyone considered using half 10-w 30 and 10-40 Honda full synthetic oil to stem the heat on this air cooled engine?

Why not just 10/40 full synthetic , you get protection at the upper range (40)

10W40 full synthetic should give you a good experience at high temperatures. You may just not notice the benefit until you start lining up in traffic congestion with the rest of the caged cattle.

I had been using 15w-50 range for my CB sometime now. My watercooled Kawa had been using 15w-50 for 100k KMs, (touch wood) and she is still running strong... Just slightly heavy but running in the heat can hear the engine sound different when using 10w-40 and 15w-50. I rode my bike in the temperature range of about 80 -102 fahrenheit long hours, and 10w-40 will evaporate slightly. But if the bike only see short ride, i would still recommend to use lighter (30 / 40) weight oil.

I don’t see any problems mixing two oils that are EACH compatible by themselves. I’ve done it in various vehicles, including my Lycoming powered airplane.

There also may be little reason to do it, 10-40 would be fine itself.

This Spring I plan an oil change, likely Mobil 1 cycle, 10-30w.

Yep. 10W40 full synthetic seemed to behave very well in profuse, hot, humid summer traffic congestion and otherwise. That is, the clutch and general engine behaviour was silky and quiet. Yes, I know, very technical statements.

Looks like we need 10W-35.... Mix half 10/30 with half 10/40 and you have 10/35 !

RE: Another oil question - jtopiso_imp - 03-11-2020

Mix them if you already have 10w-30 that you don't want to waste.

Just use 10w-40 if you don't have any 10w-30.

My understanding is that you can always mix different specs, but mineral with mineral and synthetic with synthetic.
