frozen screws - rich_imp - 06-30-2022
the stator cover on my XL 350 is held on by 3 screws. one came out other 2 are frozen
this bike is an orphen that came to me form Denver. it has been sitting from mid 80s
the heads are a bit messed up so i tapped them down sprayed penetrant and let them sit then used JIS hand inpact driver, no luck. loooking at the one that came out if i dril the head it will not leave me but 2 threds to grab and not wanting to damage the magnisum cover i needed a better plane.
i took a small drill bit drilled a hole clean thru then used a inslin syringe to squirt penetrent down the hole let it sit for 2 days smacked them and out they came

that is so great i wish i could watch the movie, VERY original and you can even use the same screws again.Thanks very much for posting this unique success story Rich, much appreciated and the secret only revealed in the last sentence, well done on that one too.

Wow, now that is very clever. If you drilled clean through the length of the screw, did you mark the bit at the length of one of the other screws to know how deep to drill?

As an aside, the clutch cover screws on my '65 YDS3 Yamaha had never been unscrewed., in 57 years - they were rock solid! A JIS screwdriver wouldn't shift them and neither would a JIS bit in a manual impact driver. Then I spotted an electric impact driver (in Lidl, a cheap shop in the UK) and on a whim I bought it. What a lifesaver! I rattled round all the case screws and they were off in a trice !

I find it surprising Honda used JIS/Philips styled fasteners given that back in the late '80s many moved to hex and Allen types for engine case assembly. Motorcycle garages celebrated in glee with the change. I wonder what happened? I realize many European manufacturers still use hex/Allen heads.
