Ext warranty, rear weave - retroman_imp - 08-04-2013
Hello everyone,
I just received my first communication (HondaCare Protection Plan) in the mail. Has anyone in the forum purchased this option? or possibly waiting till just before the original warranty (1 yr ltd?) expires?
On the rear weave/tracking issue.. It's not much but I have experienced it more consistently on lower speed left turns and/or weaving back into a straight line after a slow deep banking right turn. The only other time (infrequently) that I have noticed it is during deceleration (engine braking) or coming to a stop applying only rear brake (trying to break-in rear pads since rear brake is reeaallly weak!).
I have checked out following potential contributing factors and am open to any other ideas and suggestions:
Tire pressure - 36F, 42R
Wheel balance mark on tire and wheel - in line on front, off by an inch on rear
Pulled and pushed on a few things front/back (suspension, swing arm, chain, fork..) on center stand for potential give or play.. everything looks and feels snug
Will check front and back wheel alignment as soon as I get my hands on a couple of long 2x4s
Rear shocks are at cushiest setting and feels too soft. I like my frame/suspension stiff to get a better feel for the road. I will play with the setting as soon as I get a shock spanner-wrench.
Swapping tires may fix the issue but I don't think that the brand new Dunlops are to blame. I also realize that new bikes should be issue free but things happen during transportation to dealer and/or end user.
I apologize for the lengthy post and I'm by no means complaining about the bike or the manf. Just trying to get to the root cause of a hopefully minor issue. I absolutely love the bike!!

FWIW, compared to a 'modern' bike with modern tire sizes, I've not felt overly confident with how the CB1100 feels.. it's not squirrel-y, but it doesn't feel solidly planted to me either.. I chalk it up to: well I wanted retro, I've got it.
I'll be curious to hear what you find out.

I am pretty sure the stock tires are 95% to blame. I don't care for them either and think they are too hard and the "Rain Groove" on the front is archaic . Problem is that no one seems to make a softer sport bike type tire combo for our bike. Metzeler has a front, but no rear .

+1. I've pushed my CB11 pretty hard on those stock Dunlops and found it very planted and predictable. I run my pressures at F34, R38.

Mine came with the Bridgestone tires, and its handling definitely has exceeded my expectations. The bike feels very planted to me.

I have the 5 year protection plan. When I read the Shop Repair Manual, I came to realize that this is nothing like the bike I owned 45 years ago. This thing has computers that just replacing one would pay for the entire plan.

I am aware that tremendous advances have been made in tires over the last 15 years and that the 17 inch rim is now an accepted standard. But just 15 years ago the top Superbikes raced on 18 inch rims and the EXACT same size tires that we have on our CB11's. They did have a slightly lower profile. Some of the best riders who have ever lived hung it out at rediculous lean angles and 140+ MPH speeds on a 140/18 rear tire and a 110/18 front. The capabilities of the tires on the CB11 probably exceed the ability of 99% of the men who will ever ride one. They certainly exceed mine. Most of us could ride a road course at the best of our abilities on the finest modern superbike and an old dog expert like Freddie Spencer could easily blow us away on a bone stock CB11.
The biggest limiting factor on any bike I get on is me. Cheers.

Don't want to split hairs but I think you mean Superbikes of the late Seventies/early-to-mid Eighties used 18" wheels and tire sizes comparable to the CB1100's. 17 inch wheels have been the standard for a loong time.
BTW, I totally agree with your point that the rider and not the equipment is the limiting factor in the vast majority of situations.
