Virginia riding season - redReno_imp - 07-13-2014
When does your riding season end/start throughout the year?
I am specifically asking riders in Virginia, but other answers would be nice too.
I'm from Northern Nevada and I'm not sure if I'd ride year-round there. Also am not sure where I'd like to finally settle in the country in the future but I'd definitely need to be able to ride whenever/wherever I want.

In the Norfolk area at least, it stays nice through October, maybe into November. It usually starts warming up in March or April, but took a while this year.
December is pretty cool and Jan and Feb. are cold. Too cold for me. I usually don't ride after October, but I am a wimp about being cold.

I'll be pretty close to Washington DC.
I'm trying to decide if I want to ship my bike out there, if I do, I'll have to ride it all the way back to Cali in the middle of December.
Or cough up the dough to have it shipped again.

Then I would just store it and go without it. If this is a short term thing, IMHO, it's not worth the money.

This is Canada, so of course we're off the road for an average of six months depending on where you are.
Where I live on the east coast that usually means mid November until mid April - again, depending on the weather; sometime longer; sometimes shorter.

I live about 45 minutes north of DC. Last winter was considerably worse than normal...but in most years there's a day or two of "warm enough" weather (which by my definition is 40+) with clear roads once every 2-3 weeks from December thru February. It's not ideal, but it's generally enough that, if I make the effort to ride when I can, I don't really need to winterize bikes.
In November and March things are ramping down/up, respectively. So in general I consider the "normal" riding season here to be roughly mid-March through mid-November. The situation is probably a bit better in DC/NOVA.
Decent cold-weather riding gear--particularly coupled with heated grips and hand guards (or heated gear, if you want to go whole-hog)--will gain you some riding days too.
As far as riding to CA in the middle of December...it all depends on luck and timing, I suppose. If you caught a lucky warm day or two out of DC (which definitely happens--I remember it being in the 70s one weekend in DC last year), you could make your way south before heading west and be home free.

In southeast Georgia you can ride all year with some of the best riding in mid winter. July and August are the only months when my riding is restricted to early morning. The heat and humidity are simply too uncomfortable.
