Hand position on grips - Offroad - 07-22-2014
I'm curious, I was just reading the two grip buddies/puppies threads but didn't want to change the subject...so I thought I'd start a new one. (Although I have some numbness on my throttle hand they might cure)
Where do you place your hand on the grips when riding?
I seem to prefer keeping the outer portion of my hand (maybe my little finger width) on the stationary part of the grip as a reference that lets me more finely control my throttle position. Also it gives me more leverage and what I think is more control turning.
However, this seems to sometimes have my hand maybe a little too far away from some of the interior switches/controls (not really too far just not as close as possible…like reaching an extra row away on a keyboard when typing, like typing numbers are easier to miss than others)
So I wondered if anyone rides with their hands towards the most interior position possible without touching any of the stationary parts of the grip or towards the outer portion like I do?

Strewth mate, never thought too much about it. More towards middle to inner I guess. But at times of high anxiety I have been known to remind myself to grip firmly with the knees and stop trying to squeeze the bar ends off. I think the standard bars have enough purchase to counter steer very positively with a light pressure.

Usually a pretty wide grip (old motocross habit I guess) with the outside of my hands on or near the edge of the bar ends where they meet the grips.

On the CB my hands are "resting" on the mid to inner part of the grips without touching the stationary parts.. I was one with Grip Puppies installed and it does help with the numbness Issue you might be having. Also, I agree with gripping your tank with your knees helps us to be more relaxed on our handle bars which only require light pressure required when riding which lessens numbness on your hands .

I've had this Kuryakyn Throttle Boss on my last 4 bikes. It has not deteriorated in close to 10 years of use.
It really let's you relax your grip on the throttle, preventing numbness. Because of this, I tend to ride with both hands on the outside edge of each grip. I do have a 10" span (hand span, that is), so this does not hinder me from reaching the levers.

Mine are usually lightly touching the inner "flange" of the grip (where it meets the controls), which is part of the grip on most all of my bikes.
I'm also running the Grip Puppies - I'm 57, and I find that the smallish diameter grips on a lot of new bikes, and most sportbikes really get my hand to aching in no time. The larger diameter of the Puppies, the slightly spongy feel, and the much less slippery surface allow me to grip less firmly, and ride for much longer without cramps or aches.

Thanks Gumby 1100, I'd never heard of these, (Amazon should deliver mine in 2 days) ;-)...got me searching these, other throttle locks/cruise controls....didn't realize there were so many options.

I found a another thread on cruise controls, but a new thread on throttle locks might be a good one.
Makes me wonder if I spend more time riding or more time thinking about riding and buying stuff haha....cheaper and healthier than a mistress I guess!
