Model Terminology (Confused) - Stichill_imp - 04-19-2015

As far as model year 2014, CB1100 (black) vs CB1100 Deluxe (red) I understand.

CB1100SA vs CB1100SAE...same thing?

Another question: was ABS available on the 2013s? If so is there a model designation for ABS vs non-ABS?

Will there be a 2015 CB1100...both ABS and non-ABS?

RE: Model Terminology (Confused) - Ghis_imp - 04-19-2015

I'm with you Stichill. I'm quite confused too. I have a '13 CB. Some '13s came with ABS, and some not. Mine is a non ABS. Is ABS standard on all '14 either standard or Deluxe? Assuming the DLX has ABS standard.

RE: Model Terminology (Confused) - Stichill_imp - 04-19-2015

Absolutely. I was surprised that some sellers on Cycle Trader, for example, are listing models like CB1100SA so they don't come up if you search CB1100.

You guys need to spend some time in the History section of the forum

http://www.cb1100forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=29

particularly these 2 threads

http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=4403

http://www.cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=5430

basically in the USA in 13 the CB1100 came in two models (1) without ABS and (2) with factory option ABS
in 2014 in the USA the CB1100 came in two models (1) std with no ABS and (2) Deluxe with ABS

as far as model designation S , SA, S65, etc I think Cormanus can set you straight on that one as I am not sure.

Honda does not make it easy with different models, colors, amenities for different parts of the globe, but we have spent the last 2 years sorting things out, and "writing" it down and most everything can be found in the History section of the forum

Thank you, The ferret. I searched the forum for "CB1100SA" and came up empty. I know it's common for newcomers to any forum to post questions for which content already exists and the usual response is STFA, so I appreciate your pointing in the right direction.

The history and vagaries of the CB 1100 is so complicated it's impossible to answer in one post.

Just read the threads on the history of the CB1100. That was really cool!

RE: Model Terminology (Confused) - flynrider - 04-19-2015

IIRC, the '13 U.S. models were called CB1100 (no ABS) and CB1100A (ABS). That's what they were calling them on the dealer websites anyway.

RE: Model Terminology (Confused) - Cormanus - 04-19-2015

I just wrote a very long thread explaining that I didn't really know much about all this. My knowledge, such as it is, is limited to VINs. Then I did a little Google hunting and came across [url=http://www.bike-parts-honda.com/]this site. Put simply, I discovered a list of CB1100 variants and countries and the designation used to describe them. I think this list goes pretty close:

CB1100A—2010
CB1100AA—2010—ABS
CB1100B—2011
CB1100AB—2011—ABS
CB1100C—2012
CB1100AC—2012—ABS
CB1100D—2013
CB1100AD—2013—ABS
CB1100E—2014
CB1100AE—2014—ABS
CB1100SAE—2014—ABS EX/DLX

I don't understand where the US parts sites are getting CB1100 AC and CB1100A AC.

Nor do I get why there's a CB1100SADE for China alone.

If you look at the designations, a couple of things emerge. Well, I think so. First, CB1100 is (obviously) common to all. Secondly, the final letter which denotes the year and aligns with the 10th VIN digit which also denotes the year.

Thirdly, where the model has ABS, the letter "A" is inserted.

Finally, if the bike is an EX (non-US model) or DLX (US model) the letter "S" is included.

So a CB1100SAE is a 2014 EX or DLX model with ABS. A CB1100A is a 2010 model without ABS.

And so it goes. I hope that's helpful.

Flyn

You got in while I was typing. You're right. There's also CB1100SA, which is the DLX. My hunch is that the US dealers and parts suppliers aren't worrying about the year designation as they deal with that in other ways.

RE: Model Terminology (Confused) - fritzwilliger_imp - 04-19-2015

Very helpful rundown, Cormanus! The logic in the CB1100 series parallels the logic in other series, for example, the NC700 variants. Honda engineers can be a consistent bunch for the most part - they seem to prefer similar systems of model and production year designations from one model to another within the overall brand. Thanks!
