Test Ride/ Wrist Pain - Kung Fu Joe_imp - 06-19-2015

I took a test ride on a 2014 STD a couple of days ago with the intention of riding home on it... The bike felt like a good fit sitting on it. But once I took it out my wrist were extremely uncomfortable... Immediately. I tried relaxing them, loosing my grip, taking pressure off my arms, nothing helped.

When I returned to the dealership, I parked it next to my current ride to try to evaluate what was going wrong... I noticed that on my bike the top of my hand ran parallel with my forearm, with no bent in the wrist. On the CB 1100 my wrist were turned, knuckles to the sky. This seemed to be putting a lot of pressure on my outer wrists. I also noticed that the grips on my current bike (VTX 1300C) were much thicker in diameter than those on the CB 1100.

I'm 6'3, 225 lbs with long arms. Like a monkey Smile

This was on Weds... I can still feel an ache in my wrists after a 15-20 minute ride. I have no history of wrist pain or injuries.

I was thinking that pushing the bars forward might correct the situation... But I am not sure. The bars didn't really feel too low, but the bend in my wrist seemed to indicate that they were too close.

Has anyone had similar experiences on the CB 1100? Is this correctable? Am I just too tall for it?

I really like the bike and I had every intention of buying it. I will bad if I don't buy it after they let me ride it... I'm sure they would readjust the bars and let me try it again... But I wanted to ask your opinions first.

The bar mounts can be switched around, placing the bars farther forward on the triple clamp. That, and lower bars help. I am 6'2" and more arms than legs. I didn't have wrist pain, but didn't like the layout of the stock bars. Since swapping to the lower CB500 bars, the bike feels just right.

Sounds like at least first try moving the bars. I moved mine and the brake and clutch levers some. Others have changed bars to the Honda low bar or Renthals or whatever. Some have added bar risers. There are options.

Loosen the bars and rotate them up and away from you a bit so that your wrists are in a more neutral position. I did this and added some $25, 7/8" bar risers I found on eBay and it's better. Not as comfy as a Goldwing or GS, but better than stock.

sounds like you are getting advice for both, lowering and raising the bars.
I lowered mine an inch or so, and they are narrower, but I think lowering them would add more pressure than stock....I'm used to a sport bike and bicycles which have the bars lower than the seat. Seems weird to have pain in such a short time....

Cormanus,

How do you do a link with the red letters like you did with "this thread"?

If you're in the main posting window, type the words you want to be highlighted then click the link icon above the window. Paste the URL you want to link to into the box that appears.

When you do that, you'll see the text that the forum needs to display in your draft post. That will show you how to insert it manually. Also [url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/misc.php?action=help&hid=7]See here about 6 lines down.

So, the text of what I did looks like this.

I hope that makes sense. Email or PM me if it doesn't and I'll try again.

The grips are an easy fix. They make high density foam grip covers that slide over the existing grips. They damp out vibration as well as making the grips substantially fatter. I used Grab-On grip covers and there's also a brand called Grip Puppies.
