CB - What does this mean? - Django - 12-26-2014

I'm wondering, what does CB mean? Is there an abbreviation behind that? [Image: 7ba2860d55ccd645d86362d8dd10e4ea.gif]

CB ist quite old, many types of Honda since the 60s have been called CB ...

What is it:

City Bike?
Custom Bike?
Combustion Bike?

I've got the impression, just the models with inline 4-stroke engine are called CB

Could somebody please be so kind and enlighten me on that?

Lot's of debate to be found online. I tend to subscribe to the idea that the letters themselves don't stand for words, such as "City Bike" as some argue, but they did signify particular models, that everyone understood when we were growing up.

CB was the low pipe, street only, super sports...

CL was the high pipe, low front fender, scrambler...

SL was a down swept pipe, high front fender, motosport (dual-sport of the day)...

That same pattern was followed whether the engine size was 100, 125, 175 or 350 which all had the same 3 models (CB, CL or SL) over the years.

Came later, first with the XL250, still a "Motosport", even having the word as part of the logo on the exhaust. Big difference was that exhaust, which was no longer down swept, as on the SL models. Now, high front fender and high exhaust, which was a pattern retained by the various XL models to follow.

Had one exactly like this. Bought it brand new and remember having a problem with tank leaking at back mounting bracket. Honda replaced it under warranty. Lot's of fun with this bike on & off the road.
