rode a Harley today - use2b_imp - 12-13-2016 didn't mean to and it scared the he** out of me. the morning started very nice as i set out on the CB1100 to do the back roads to the Kubota dealership and pick up my rebuilt bucket cylinder . was such a pleasant ride for about 6 miles when i noticed my oil light flicker once. immediately i cut the engine as i pulled in the clutch then coasted to a side road to pull over. came to a stop while a Harley rider was looking at me and he came over wanting to help. I had just got off my bike and noticed the oil filter was leaking so i told him i would need to trailer the bike home but he wanted to tighten down the oil filter which i declined. about that time a young girl drives up in a jeep with no door's and a halter top on asking me if their is anything she can do for me so things are already looking up. I say yea , my bike is leaking oil and i have to get it home which she replies i have a motorcycle trailer and live two doors down. so really i am kinda done with the Harley guy although he was nice. so i get to the girls house and when she gets out she is covered with tattoo's " Ink " I think it is called and tells me her old man is asleep inside and quickly gets him out of bed. This guy looks so ragged and is covered with tattoos , head . neck , arms without end , but he has a motorcycle trailer so i am good with that. He opens his garage and their behold is 3 old Harley's and we laugh about the oil leaks as i watch my step. the only one that runs is his wife's 883 and that is what we are to take to my house he says as lump forms in my trout . I can not remember in the last 50 years when i rode on the back of a motorcycle and this thing is so junked out. so i get on the back after several efforts to crank it and soon we are on our way with me hanging onto a sissy bar scared to death. the engine gave a big hiccup as he pulled out in front of a car and was terrible at directions but the whole experience was near cardiac arrest terrible. last turn to my home is the one i did the "180" a week or so before and had sand , was wet , gravel and oil there and he was taking it way to fast so i panic and lean the wrong way very hard which straightens him up but puts us off the road which bothers him but i do not think he would have made that turn. sorry for the long story but this is what i found and the bike is fine , no damage. RE: rode a Harley today - LongRanger_imp - 12-13-2016 Wow, crazy story. It's been in the 20's here, so a ride on the back of a stranger's 883 beats the heck out of what I'm able to do. Curious about your oil filter. Is that a second gasket peeking out from behind it? If so, is it left over from the previous filter? Or, was the filter over-tightened and that's the gasket squishing out? RE: rode a Harley today - 4 Paws_imp - 12-13-2016 Interesting. Once again, never judge a book by its cover. Good of them to help out without hesitation. Like LongRanger I am also curious about the gasket, 2 or over tightened or ....... Notice I graciously didn't make any comments about riding b**** on the back of the Harley with her old man. He helped me load it and rode with me to help unload it. on the way there he told me he was a tattoo artist and was struggling to get by after getting out of prison " red flag " ! So we dropped my bike off in front of my home and i paid him $40 as i took him back home. was going to let him pick all the citrus he wanted but instead told him i didn't trust my German Shepard's inside the fence . still glad he helped and i paid in cash , worked out for us both. RE: rode a Harley today - Rocky_imp - 12-13-2016 Great story with a good ending I had a good chuckle when I read it. RE: rode a Harley today - noroomtomove - 12-13-2016 Good read use2b, I know of another oil filter story on the road to Gundagai. RE: rode a Harley today - emptysea - 12-13-2016 Great story. Glad you and your bike are ok. Would rather a picture of the girl than the filter, but I understand that we want to keep this about motorcycles. RE: rode a Harley today - Nortoon_imp - 12-14-2016 Was the oil filter gasket lubricated with fresh oil before being installed? Normally that would stop it from tearing. RE: rode a Harley today - Sam Mac_imp - 12-14-2016 Glad you didn't wreck the Harley guy that was kind enough to bail you out. Note to all of you guys, always check to make sure the gasket isn't stuck to the base when you remove a filter no matter what it's on. It's not common but it does happen. Yes actually i felt very bad about leaning the other way as it was so amateur . didn't realize i have no experience being a passenger and knowing this was the same turn i almost lost it just hit an automatic response. having thought about this i now wonder if my rear tire did not have oil on it the day i did the 180 ? i see no oil where i park but do roll it inside and did have oil on both sides of the rear tire . ether way we had plenty of level ground for the run off and as amateur as it was i still think we would have gone down knowing the multi slippery situation of that curve and he was going in so hot it was almost a knee drager . I am a terrible passenger in a car but did not know how bad i would be on the back of a very old Ratbike while already scared going straight. also feel bad the 1st guy who wanted to help me had a nice new Harley road king i think and i was thinking " no way am i going to ride home on the back of that " while thinking the chic in the jeep would but she had somewhere else to go. I learned a lot but not sure just what it was ? probably i will call a cab next time. |
