a question and some findings about my CB11oo - ohiorider_imp - 04-16-2017
One week old, and slightly over 500 miles on the odometer. Here's my question. Does Honda require the bike have a'first "service" performed at 500 or so miles? I'm thinking some of the Euro bikes recommend an oil and filter change and a general check out of the bike at about 500 miles. One week has almost passed and I'm over 500 miles.
Findings: Front suspension - I measured distance between bottom of top triple clamp and the fork tube scraper/seal in several positions.
- forks fully extended: 160mm
- bike on side stand: 140mm
- me holding bike straight up with me sitting in saddle: 115mm
- bread wrapper twistee movement rocking bike/brake on: 64mm
Fork at softest position (4th ring showing)
Does that sound about right?

PS also set bike shocks at #1 (least preload) position. I weigh 160#.

The first service is at 600 miles. There are other more experienced CB1100 owners that will chime in on the rest of this for you. Good job though. 500 miles in a week... I've got 88 in a month.

Honda recommends a first service, basically an oil and filter change, check chain tension, fasteners, at 600 miles. This need not be done at a dealer but you must have a record of service done for warranty reasons.
Suspension settings are a personal thing and everyone has their own opinion on what works for them. I'm at about 195 with gear on and I have my settings a bit firmer.

See this thread and particularly post 14 about front suspension .. I photo'd all the rings and suspension and each one showed a similar increase or decrease in travel depending on which way you were adjusting.

The problem with setting up suspension of a stock bike are it's limitations with suspension adjustment. You may not be able to set up a bike with proper sag as the experts want. Then again I'm not sure the suspension gurus are not setting up bikes for racetracks which require stiff suspension and not for pleasure riding which might require softer suspension depending on how you ride.
and now that I think about it there are 5 rings on the front forks. I may have said 4 before because that's where I run mine lol. I always tell people to find a particular road they ride a lot. Set the suspension full stiff and ride the road. Too stiff? come back and set the suspension full soft. Go ride the road. Too soft? Start adjusting stiffer until you find it the best you can riding the road each time you make an adjustment.

Bob I think a lot of people are traveling beyond their local dealer to get either a bike that's available or a much better price. I bought used last month and went 400 miles (Michigan to Missouri) to ger it and trailered it back.

Bob, the service intervals are listed in the owner's manual. I have an extra '14 owner's manual available for sale if your bike didn't come with one and you're interested in buying one.

Perhaps the Honda way is better, since I won't be tempted to twist the key until it bends or breaks!
