How Are New Bikes Handle Bars Positioned - Aka Tsubasa_imp - 05-12-2017
Just curious how set up techs know where to put our handlebars and controls when seting up our bikes for the first time. Do the bars have dimples like old bikes or is it all personal taste in positioning?

There are always dimples in the bars to line up with the handlebar clamps. The CB1100 comes with the switches and controls on the bars properly aligned at the factory. The dealer just bolts the handlebars on, aligns the dimples, and puts the mirrors on.

They aren't fixed in one spot though. You can move them in the clamps some and a few have reversed the mounts to move the bars back some.

The CB comes in pretty much all assembled at the factory

That is a sweet picture. Thanks! Almost every other one I have seen looked as if the handlebars had to be installed at the dealer. With the last bike I bought, the dealer tech put on the bars and really made a mess of things. I would be thrilled if the 2017 CB1100 EX only needed the mirrors installed.

I wonder if the mirrors can be adjusted at the base without loosening the locknut? My Z1000 had a great feature that would allow the mirror stalk to be pushed back and forth after the jam nut was set. One had to push pretty hard to make an adjustment but is worked slick.

The mirror stalks have a left hand thread that goes into an adapter that has left-hand female threads and right-hand male threads. The adapter is first tightened into the master cylinder mount, the mirror stalks are adjusted, and secured into the adapter with a lock nut (left-hand).
All this is for safety. If you were to hit something immovable (let's say, a pedestrian, a car mirror, or a tree branch) the mirror stalk would be able to rotate back by loosening at one of the sets of threads. The left mirror would loosen (or break away) at the bottom of the adapter, the right mirror would loosen at the top of the adapter. Other brands use a mirror mount that has a friction "clutch" that allows it to move either direction, like your Z1000.

And very handy the reverse thread is too. I hit a bird once with my right-hand mirror. Aside from the front being a wee bit messy, the mirror simply turned out of the way and was fine. If the bird had pushed against the thread, I suspect its weight plus my speed would have resulted in a broken mirror.

The '14s were in wider crates and came fully assembled except for the mirrors. The batteries on the '14s were factory filled and installed, but the battery cables were disconnected and hanging out below the left side cover.
