Mythical Creature, A Continued Search - Nemo_imp - 05-23-2019
I want to ride ATGATT, but when Florida weather turns infernal I tend to spend less time on the bike. My daily commute in city stop-n-go traffic doesn't make the ATGATT ride any more pleasant. Also, this 240 lbs of awesome always run a bit warmer than normal size individuals.
I make some changes as the season gets warmer; open face helmet, lighter mesh gloves and non kevlar lined pants. I pack my work shirt in my tail bag and only use my inner shirt under my jacket, then put my shirt on when I get to the office. But...
I still continue searching for that jacket that magically moves air through, even when sitting still. No luck yet.
Do you have a recommendation for the coolest summer riding jacket? Please?

I does, and I have one.
I think I may have unachievable expectations of how one must feel while sitting on the bike, in traffic, wearing a mesh jacket. Maybe I should also add that I wouldn't want to spend more than $300 on a mesh jacket.

I have bad news for you Nemo...
I used to have a habit of riding in a Tshirt in the dead of summer in Charleston (we got a lot of the same weather you do around that time), and let me tell you, even with bare skin the heat of traffic isn't what i'd call comfortable. If a tshirt isn't cool enough, there's no jacket in existence that's going to do the trick, unless you get one of those liquid cooled Nascar suits. I eventually just decided "i'm guaranteed to be uncomfortable, might as well have armor on."

I know it... I guess a man can dream. But if there is heated gear, why can't there be a jacket with cooling fans in it?

im in pensacola, i had a thought about a backpack that has cowls on it to direct air down along the back. ofc thats only good whilest moving, but a bike seat that has butt coolers like the car seats have would be nice, or similar riding jacket that does something along those same lines. Even with the mesh jacked on its just too hot sometimes, although that never stops me.

The new Olympia "Dallas". I just bought one. Flows a ton of air and isn't too pricey. Includes CE2 armor for shoulders, elbows AND back. Order one size smaller than you think you need--I have a 2XL and it's very big...BUT...I plan on layering for wind and insulation in the winter which is not an issue for you.

Out here in the hot and arid West, seasoned riders know the best way to deal with intense summer heat is to wet their t-shirt and then zip up their non-mesh jacket (leather or Cordura) and open the vents. Non-mesh to insulate their skin from the hot, dry air. The air that flows through the jacket will evaporate the moisture from the t-shirt and provide a nice chilling effect. For about 45 minutes, that is. After that, it's time to stop and re-wet the t-shirt. I've resorted to drenching my jacket, too. In the hot and humid South, however, I imagine that would be torture!

I've done the wet t-shirt bit with my mesh jacket and it still works...not as good because evaporation happens too fast. However, I've never ridden in desert conditions which I'm sure makes a huge difference.
I'm thinking of buying a cooling vest to wear under my mesh jacket on especially hot days.
