New Hipster Lid for the DGR - Gone in 60 - 05-06-2022

Since I'm gearing up for the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, I figured I should be wearing something more stylish than my commuter helmets, which are festooned with reflective tape, camera mounts and a rear flashing LED. I did slap a bunch of Gulf stickers on one of them, but I don't want to look like a poser with a helmet covered in stickers when I join up with such a cultured riding group, who would expect no less than a genuine Steve McQueen Signature Gulf lid.

So, I snagged this little beauty, a Biltwell Gringo ECE in a color called Seaweed. On clearance right now at motorcyclegear.com if anyone is interested. I was hesitant, as the head shape is listed as round-oval, and I'm more of an intermediate-oval. However, I got a chance to try one on recently, and it didn't pinch anywhere too tightly.

It's sort of a lime gold color. The quality is not bad, you can see a few tiny ripples in the plastic if you look hard enough, but I have the jaded eye of someone who has done paint and bodywork. No shield, just provisions for various shield types that can snap in place without hinging. I figured I'd just wear sunglasses and get a face full of air, as there are no vents. They do make a version with a hinged shield, but it wasn't on sale, and this will be for occasional use.

To break it in, last night I wore it while I watched a lengthy documentary on the rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Wore it on the ride in this morning, making a few stops on the way. No complaints, it is tight, but I'm sure it will break in a bit. Now at least my head is ready for the DGR.

Speaking of the DGR, I'm just twenty bucks away from earning the commemorative pin set. If anyone wants to donate to my ride, send me a PM. Shy

Very nice helmet. Reminds me of my white Bell Star helmet I bought in 1973.

Thanks, Redbirds. I've been enjoying the airflow through the open face. Interesting note about airflow - If I'm on the CB1100 or the CB300, sunglasses are fine. However, if I'm on the Triumph, I need to wear some kind of goggles or I get a lot of eye irritation.

Last weekend, I took a bee sting on the chin while riding with this helmet, so maybe there's something to be said for face shields after all.

For sure Gone.

Besides, if I recall clearly, the Yellow Jackets literally come out of the ground in and around the L.A. region. Kinda bothersome watching the sand jiggle.

That is alotta inconvenience while riding.

Never saw 'em coming out of the ground... but wouldn't surprise me.

Cool hat, GI60. I have a green sparkly Gringo that I picked up at a swap meet. I haven't worn it yet, but when I do, I think it will be with goggles to complete the look and to keep me from tearing up. No one will mistake me for a hipster, though. Perhaps an artificial hipster, though.

After reading pdedse's story about hitting a swarm of bees, I'd be looking for a shield.
