When someone sees you have a new car it’s usually positive but roll up on a bike and the skeletons start crawling out the woodwork. The cage dweller will start telling stories of motorcycle accidents of past. Some even give detailed descriptions of fatally, gore, blood etc. I’m not new to riding and understand its part of the package but just not sure why people feel the need to say it. Yes, I understand it’s dangerous, yes I’ve personally lost a friend riding, yes I’ve had two cars creep into my lane this past week but I’m still riding and will continue riding because it’s what I love to do. It's what makes me happy.

not sure of why people say what they do. Maybe they're projecting their own fear or maybe they are genuinely concerned for our well being, but it happens all the time to all of us. Similar things, only usually not as dire, are described to pregnant women.
I don't know the why, but I usually respond with "I know a guy who died from falling down his stairs, but I still use the stairs in my house." My friend Glen has a more succinct response which also usually shuts the person up -- "Dead is dead, my friend."

There are a lot worse ways to go. I'd rather do it doing something I love. I have lost a lot of friends that would have loved to have had the choice. There is risk in almost everything we do. The best we can do is minimize it and enjoy the ride! Love the life your living and live the life you love. What else is there?

When I was in motorcycle sales I was amazed at the people who would come into the shop to look at motorcycles and then regal to me horror stories. They would usually end up saying something like " I could never ride a motorcycle because my (cousin, brother, friend) was killed on one" to which I usually replied " gee it's a good thing they weren't killed in a car or you would have to walk everywhere".

Great response! All sorts of replies come to mind, like recalling the person who was walking across the street and got hit by a garbage truck...

I think they mean well and just don't realize how patronizing and insulting it is to the rider. Doesn't make it any less annoying. It seems to be more likely to occur when someone starts riding or returns to riding, or a person meets someone who is a rider for the first time. After a while people come to accept that you ride and stop talking about it with alarm.
You just know: many of these people use their smartphones while driving, endangering themselves and others more than they could every realize. I just read about a 21 year old young man in Kenosha, Wisconsin who drove a Ford E250 van into the back of a stopped school bus at full highway speed...no sign of applied brakes. He was killed; luckily no children suffered serious injury.
If I'm feeling peevish, I will sometimes ask people if they wear a helmet in the car to prevent head injury from impact with the side window or roof in event of a serious accident. Or, have they considered installation of a 4-point seatbelt harness. They look at me like I have two heads.

That statement is so true because it has been at least three years since my last bike and was quickly reminded of that aspect of ownership. Something I’m sure all bikers deal with at some point or another.
One way I’ve come to deal with it is to turn the tables on them by responding with an even more horrific story then theirs. Absolutely love watching their facial expression and gives me a good laugh.

Sometimes I think the nay-sayers are genuinely concerned for one's well being. Other times, I suspect they are revelling in the moment of being able to tell you obliquely that they think you're an idiot for riding a motorcycle. I'm not sure I much care what they think, but I do wish they'd either keep it to themselves or come right out and say 'I think you're an idiot for riding a motorcycle.' Then we'd know what we were talking about.
Fat chance, I guess.
