Low - midrange torque -- not as fun? - postoak_imp - 07-24-2017
I've been thinking about buying a Bonneville T120, but one thing that puts me off is that it has the much touted "low and midrange torque" -- just like the CB1100.
I've had a post about this before -- I never found the CB1100 as much fun as my Nighthawk 750 and in trying to analyze why, I think it had something to do with the torque curve. The Nighthawk didn't "wake up" until 4000 RPM and I always kept ii at that RPM at cruise so that if I needed a quick get-away I could take advantage of the torque between 4000 and 6500 or so. Something about moving up through the RPM range to 4000 in each of the gears was very enjoyable and I'm looking to repeat that experience -- so much so that I've even thought about buying an old original CB750 and having it restored.
Anybody have any insight as to why the 750 seemed more fun to me? Has anybody experienced the same thing?

I'm confused. If you are running a CB 1100 between 4000 and 6000 rpms it should be much more exciting and responsive than a CB 750 Nighthawk with both more torque and more HP than the Nightawk ever though about having. The CB absoluetly wakes up above 4,000 rpms.
Btw my brothers new Bonnie T120 runs the exact same speeds in the exact same gear as my CB1100. VIrtually peas in a pod power wise.

I sold my CB1100 so I can't repeat my experience but it seemed that 2500 rpm or 3000 rpm was the sweet spot for that bike. At 4000 rpm it was loud and "busy" in a way I can't describe. I think many others have commented that the bike is most comfortable around 3000 -- there must be some reason why.
But yeah, I'm confused. I lack the experience of many bikes to know why I liked the 750 so much.

Well I run mine mostly between 2500 and 3000 rpms and my shift point is about 3200, but I just spent a week riding with Offroad, and he likes to run higher rpms and runs between 4000 and 5000 because he says he likes the more aggressive feeling of the bike at those rpms, with harder acceleration, and more engine braking

Moot point. If you've sold your CB I hope you find something that suits you. If you are talking about power coming on at 4 to 5k though it's probably hp, not torque. Good luck

Max torque on the CB 1100 is at 5800 rpms, Max horsepower at 7300 rpms.

Well, Ben, I intend to hang out on this forum still as it's members are the best I've found. I only have the space and money for one bike at a time, or I'd still have the CB1100. Currently I'm riding a 2014 Honda GL1800c. It is an excellent bike and suits my riding style a bit better than the CB1100 or T120, if I'm honest. It, too, is most comfortable at 2500-3000 so not much different than the CB1100 in that regard. But sometimes I get tired of its "largeness" and I definitely miss not having a naked bike.

If I were a bigger person I would have a GL1800. Very cool tourer. MY wife would LOVE riding on the back of a GL1800. They are quick too and handle fairly well.

Hey, postoak, sorry to have sounded so brusque. I agree this is the best forum around.
I probably am a bit grumpy from rider withdrawal. Spending the summer in Trinidad, CA, fishing mostly. Had planned to bring the bike over but had detached retina surgery and can't go above 1000 ft for a while.

It seems to me that you're trying to quantify your own personal feeling of "fun" and how it differs between the two bikes. I suggest that this is an exercise in futility. Test ride the T-120 and see if it gives you that feeling you had with your Nighthawk.
